The Dashwood Tigers are
gaining momentum in their
drive to the Ontario Baseball
Association Senior "D"
championship.
The Tigers eliminated
Kincardine in two straight
games over the weekend and
are now ready to proceed to
the provincial semi-finals.
In Listowel, Saturday, the
Tigers walloped Kincardine
14-3 and back at the Dash-
wood diamond Sunday night
they edged the visitors 2-0 in
one of the best games played
locally in many years.
The Tigers will meet the
winner of a Nanticolse-
Woodslee series. They are
playing their final game
Saturday.
The Dashwood club
combined strong pitching,
timely hitting and great
defensive plays to shut-out
Kincardine 2-0 Sunday night.
They managed only four
hits off Kincardine speed
bailer Mike Petter, but, one
was a big blow.
With two out in the Tiger
second, Barry Baynham
drew a walk and second
baseman Dave Parsons
cracked a Fetter fastball
over the left centre field
fence and that was the ball
game as far as scoring was
concerned.
Parsons was also one of
the fielding heroes for Joe
Fulop's Dashwood crew, He
made a spectacular diving
catch of a line shot by Carey
opening the Kincardine ninth
going far to his right towards
second base and snaring the
ball just off the ground.
First baseman. Jim
Guenther pulled off an
equally exciting catch from
the bat of Dunlop, the first
Kincardine batter in the
sixth.
Southpaw John Bruijns
exhibiting excellent control
held Kincardine to six hits
and struck out nine, several
of these came in clutch
situations with the opposition
threatening.
Kincardine loaded the
bases in the fifth on three
infield hits and again
crammed the sacks in the
eighth but were unable to get-
-a runner across the plate.
In addition to the key home
run by Dave Parsons, the
Tigers could only get three
hits from the offerings of
Mike Petter, who Dashwood
manager Joe Fulop
described as " the best
pitcher we have faced all
year."
The other three hits were
all singles from the bats of
Jim Guenther, Glen Thur-
man and John Hayter,
In Saturday's opening
game, the Tiger bats were
booming. They attacked two
Kincardine pitchers for no
less than 20 hits in romping
to the 14-3 victory.
At the same time right
hander Perry Stover had
little trouble in keeping the
Kincardine bats subdued.
With a lead of 9-1 as early as
the fourth inning Stover had
little trouble in coasting
home.

In addition to three single
run innings the only other
serious Kincardine threat
came in the bottom of the

bases on three hits but

The only extra base hits off
Stover were a triple in the
fourth by Mike Petter and a
double in the eighth by

Kincardine,
In addition to his strong
pitching performance, Perry
Stover was one of three
Tigers to get three hits
apiece.
The first Tiger tally came
in the first inning when Jim
Guenther doubled with two
out and scored on a single
from Stover's bat.
In the Dashwood second,
Jim Dietrich singled and
came home on a similar hit
by Glen Thurman. It was the
first of three singles for
Thurman in three con-
secutive innings.
Four runs crossed the
plate in the third as the
result of singles by Thur-

Dickey and Perry Stover,
Three runs crossed the
plate in the fourth as Stover,
Dickey, Thurman and John
Hayter rapped out singles.
In the Dashwood fifth,
Barry Baynham drew a walk
and rounded the bases on
singles by Dave Parsons and
Jim Dietrich. Baynham and
Parsons also scored in the
sixth without the aid of a hit,
The final two Dashwood
markers came in the
seventh. They were sent
home by singles from the
bats of Barry Baynham Bob
Hoffman, Jim Dietrich and
Rob Dickey, his third of the
name.
The other hit in the Dash-
wood attack came in the
ninth, a single by Doug
Fairbairn. -

Tigers beat Kincardine Sports
Spotlight
By ROSS HAUGH
Tigers great
Over the weekend we took in two baseball games
and found a big difference in many categories including
excitement, calibre of ball and carrying out the basic
fundamentals of the game.
Friday night we watched the London Majors play
the Cambridge Terriers in the Senior Intercounty and
Sunday we were in Dashwood to see the Tigers beat
Kincardine 2-0.
Granted that the game in Dashwood was one of the
best we have ever seen, it sure outshone the brand of
ball shown in London.
The Tigers thanks to a two run homer by Dave
Parsons ousted Kincardine in two straight games and
are now in the OBA Senior 'D' semi finals.
The Tigers will have to wait at least until early next
week before they get back into action. They are schedul-
ed to meet Nanticoke or Woodslee in the next round.
These two clubs are tied at a game apiece and the third
contest will be played Saturday afternoon as lights are
not available.
The Dashwood club has been informed that if they
defeat their next opposition they sould be ready to
travel to Pembroke for the provincial finals on
September 22.
Getting back to the Intercounty game, it was very
loosely played. Cambridge won 10-9 in 10 innings. It
was actually a comedy of errors with a wild pitch on an
intentional pass, numerous passed balls and wild pick-
offs and other bad throws.
In contrast, the Dashwood-Kincardine game
featured excellent fielding and strong pitching. Tiger
John Bruijns and Mike Petter of Kincardine battled
pitch for pitch with the one long hit by Dave Parsons
deciding the issue.
Tiger manager Joe Fulop said Petter who has come
up through the Kincardine minor system is the best
pitcher his club had faced all year.
John Bruijns pitched equally as well. He struck out
nine batters and was helped out of possibly crucial
situations by sensational fielding.
One of the top defensive plays came on the first
Kincardine batter in the ninth when Dave Parsons
made a diving catch for a ball that looked like a hit.
Earlier in the game first baseman Jim Guenther
made a similar spectacular diving catch to rob a Kincar-
dine batter of a hit.
Sunday's game in Dashwood drew the largest
crowd of the season and they were rewarded with a
great brand of ball.
Anyone looking for exciting and interesting enter-
tainment for a couple of hours should attend the next
home game of the Tigers,
Manager Joe Fulop has an excellent pitching staff
to call on. He has right hander Perry Stover and lefties
John Bruijns and Jim Guenther along with reliable
relievers in Barry Baynham and Brian Rader.
Veteran Bob Hoffman has been more than a
capable replacement behind the plate since regular
catcher Kevin Bestard was injured at work.
The two left handed pitchers have been alternating
at first base and the balance of the infield of Dave Par-
sons, John Hayter and Barry Baynham is solid.
The outfield crew consists of Jim Dietrich, Glen
Thurman, Rob Dickey, Kevin Hern, and Tom Hayter.
Other alternates are Joe Arnold and Doug Fairbairn
who also looks after coaching duties at first base.
Summer flew
Labour Day heralds the end of the summer season
and holidays and to most of us it came too soon and we
hear a lot of remarks like, "Where did the summer go?"
The main reason the summer seemed to fly so
quickly is that most people are very busy and there
wasn't a weekend in this area at least when there wasn't
a special event going on.
While the time for summer activity sports such as
golf, tennis, lawn bowling, etc. is almost past there is the
opportunity to go jogging to improve or retain your
present physical condition.
For those who feel jogging isn't for them, how
about just simple walking. We have a few tips from
Fitness Ontario telling about the advantages of walking.
Walking gets your whole body going, the muscles,
heart, lungs and circulation. In fact, many experts agree
that walking is one of the most effective exercises for
your whole body, whether you want to shape up or
simply burn off a few unwanted pounds.
A brisk 20 minute walk each day for 36 days can
take one pound off the average person's weight, In one
year that adds up to 10 pounds.
Don't worry about the extra exercise increasing
your appetite. It won't. Several well known nutrionists
claim that walking actually decreases appetites.
What else can walking do for you? It helps drain
off anxiety or anger. Often, walking helps clear your
head. That's a fact many famous writers, poets and
other deep thinkers have known and practiced through
the years,
Before you begin walking for exercise, remember to
begin with short distances. Then day by day work your
way up to some long distance jaunts. Walk slowly at
first then make trip more brisk than the last.
Here are some important tips and this writer
should be the first to try them.
Hide your car keys and walk to the neighbourhood
store or the post office. If you really need a car, park at
the far end of the parking lot and walk to your destina-
tion.
When you have a choice of escalators or elevators
as compared to stairs, try the stairs for once.
If in the city and riding a bus, get off the bus a stop
early and walk the rest of the way.
Remember, walking is not only free and there is
lots of room, but also can become one of your daily
pleasures. Regularity in walking is essential for self im-
provement. Try to walk at least once a day. You will
like the good feeling,
while striking out six bat-
ters.
Saveway Lieury
In one of the best played
games in Exeter this year
Saveway edged Lieury 1-0 to
take a 2 game lead in the
series.
Doug Pearson's double in
the bottom of the seventh
scored Ken Bergman from
second with the winning run.
Bergman had led off the
inning with a single and was
sacrificed to second by Paul
McKnight.
Glen Thompson toiled for
Lieury and pitched a strong
game allowing five hits while
striking out three. Lieury
had eight hits off Saveway
pitcher, Brian Hodgins, who
struck out five batters in
picking up the win.
