Kirkton wins first round The Kirkton midget girls won their first playoff round downing Mitchell in two straight by scores of 22-5 and 21-18, Tuesday on a miserable misty cold night, Kirkton broke loose in the first inning' to score ten runs and never looked back behind the one hit pitching of Brenda Iredale. Kim Heather was the leading batter with three hits, a double and two singles. Kelly Kernick hit a home run and a double. Julianne MacLean, Joan Cooper, Brenda Iredale and Jane Simpson each hit safely to bring the total hits to nine, Thursday night in Mitchell under more favourable weather conditions Kirkton again trounced Mitchell 22 to 5 to eliminate them from further playoffs., • Kim Heather was the top hitter with three home runs followed by Natalie Stroud with a triple, double and single, Jane Sims added two singles followed by Julianne MacLean who banged out a triple. Kirkton will now meet either St. Marys or Wellesley. 44tta4— The two courts should always be locked during club time. Tennis Tip of the Week The Use of Backspin To hit a stroke with backspin, use your regular form, but open-up the face of the racquet. The racquet head will put underspin on the ball when it's met at such an angle. Underspin will make the ball stay low when it lands, Use underspin to hit short, controlled shots, for example, a delicate drop shot. It's also used to hit approach shots when you are coming to the net. If hit short, the shot stays low and makes it difficult for your opponent to hit it hard and over the net, while keeping the ball in. Underspin on a lob will make your lob high and defensive but safe. Use underspin to give variety to your overall game, and to make it hard on your opponent's sense of timing. Topspin is great, but you'll need backspin for those situations when speed and power aren't called for. Many older players hit safe, consistently deep, backspin shots only, and they will beat most hard hitters very easily. Don't be afraid to ex- periment, Ready for playoffs Playoffs for the Exeter ladies golf club will get underway on August 28. In regular play Tuesday morning, Lois Snell was the "A" flight winner with a score of 52, Eileen Rennie was the "B" groups best and Mary Martin won in the "C" flight. Hidden holes were won by Fran Mickle and Beryl Elgie, The Dashwood Tigers will start on the Ontario Baseball. Association playoff trail this weekend. Manager Joe Fulop an- nounced Monday that the Tigers would meet either Newcastle or Kendall in the first round of OBA "D" playdowns. Arrangements were to be finalized last night, Tuesday. Depending on the outcome of the flip of a coin the first home game in Dashwood will be Friday night or Sunday afternoon. If the Tigers are successful in the first round they will then advance to meet Thorndale or Nanticoke, The Tigers qualified to represent the Huron-Perth league in provincial play by ousting the Crediton Mets in two straight games. Friday night's first game of a best-of-three series was forfeited to Dashwood when Crediton failed to field nine players. Sunday afternoon in Crediton, the Tigers scored an 11-4 victory to earn the right to head into Ontario competition, Dave Parsons and Rob Dickey each rapped out two hits to lead the Tiger batting attack.
