GA Times-Advocate, August 22, 1979 • Sunday tourney n Lucan Sports Spotlight By ROSS HAUGH Back to work • , It's with difficulty that we sit down to write a column after an excellent holiday of a little more than two weeks. A good part of the vacation was spent travelling in northern Ontario and especially the Polar Bear Express trip to Moosonee and Moose Factory Island. Some of our experiences on this trip are included in the Batten Around column on the editorial page. Editor Bill Batten is on holidays and we decided this was a good opportunity to pass on a few of our thoughts on the trip which a guide on the train called, "a trip down north." It was a very interesting trip and one we would recommend for anyone wishing to further explore our fine countryside. Great ball tourney Getting back on the subject of sporting events, one of the tops in Canada is virtually on our doorstep all this week. The Canadian senior ladies fastball championship is being held this week in Milverton. Involved in the 37 game schedule are two teams from Ontario and one from each of the other provinces along with the Northwest Territories and the Yukon. The fortunes of one of the Ontario clubs, the Milverton Suns will be followed closely by area sports fans. Two valuable members of the Milverton club are from this area. Lynne Farquhar and Iris Marshall are very versatile and capable of playing at a number of positions. Two interesting games are on tap following the opening ceremonies tonight at 6:30 p.m. Milverton takes on British Columbia and the other Ontario team from Agincourt faces Saskatchewan. The Suns, sponsored by the weekly newspaper in Milverton recently won the Ontario championship with two close victories over Agincourt. Milverton as the host team had already qualified, so, Agincourt as the runnerup also made the Canadian tournament. The Suns were second in last year's tourney in Regina and hopefully in the friendly confines of their home field can bring home "all the bacon". Anyone wishing information on scheduling, tickets, etc. can call any of the Farquhar family, Lynne or her parents Aub and Grace at 235-2781. We hope to catch at least a game or two of this big ,eveurs..So, best of luck to the Suns. Named to Ontario team Another area young lady is making a name for herself in another sport. She is Joanne Malone of Centralia who was recent- ly named to the youth quarter horse team which will represent our province at the very prestigious American Horse Congress slated for Columbus, Ohio irom Oc- tober 13 to 21, Joanne, daughter of Jack and Irene Malone has been participating in quarter horse shows almost every weekend all spring and summer long and turned in an excellent performance at the recent. CNE show in Toronto with a first, two seconds, two thirds and a fourth. She is one of the six Ontario youngsters on the per- formance team. More than 60,000 persons will be registered at the Congress in Ohio which takes up all of the fairgrounds at Ohio State University. Being selected to the Ontario team for this very im- portant quarter show is akin to being chosen for any Olympic event. The Ontario team along with one from Quebec will be competing against competition from every state in the United States. Last year, the Ontario team finished overall fourth. This is a very credible showing considering the quantity of members and horses to be chosen from south of the border. At the moment 133,951 quarter horses are registered in the United States. The figure in all of Canada is 58,551. Jack Malone told us that $427,000 was paid out in prize money at last year's event in Columbus and 3,194 horses participated. He said the Congress is an impressive event. He added, "It's just like a three ring circus. You never know what to do and see next. I have been there for three years and haven't seen it all yet." The opening and closing ceremonies with each team dressed in their own colours are similar to those at the Olympics. Most Canadians know very little about the quarter horse, but, it is the only breed native to North America. All other breeds originate in Europe. Best of luck to Joanne as she competes with her favourite quarter horse Miss Sun Dial in the big com- petition in October.
