Tigers are headed for Huron-Perth baseball league final following a two game sweep The Elimville Bantam Boys completed a very sucessful regular season last week with a 12-3 victory over Brodhagen and then took their 13-4 win-loss record into the opening round of the W.O.A.A. playoffs and swept their series with Kirkton in three games straight. Elimville 5 Kirkton 4 The first game of the series, Wednesday, was decided in extra innings. Elimville scored their first run in the first when John Kernick singled and came around to score on pitcher Steve Francis' double. In the fourth inning, trailing 3-1, Tim. Shute and Kevin Heather singled and came around to score when Robbie Miller hit a two run triple and Miller scored on Danny Shute's single. '• In the top of the seventh inning Kirktorrtied the game and Elimville failed to score in their half of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the eigth Robbie Miller singled moved to second on a passed ball. John Kernick walked and Miller scored the winning run when the Kirkton infield were unable to handle a bunted ball by Dan Gower. Steve Francis led the winners at the plate with three hits. Jim Siddall and Miller had two each. In the of Thorndale on the weekend. On Sunday in Thorndale, five Tigers had two hits each losing cause Mike Murray led Kirkton with three hits. Elimville 3 Kirkton 2 Trailing 1-0 into the third inning, John Kernick reached first on a single and moved around to score thanks to a Kirkton error and a single by Jim Siddall. In the fifth down 2-1 John Kernick singled, Gower reached first on a fielder's choice and Jim Siddall hit a two-run homer to highlight the comeback win. Kevin Heather and Jim Siddall each collected three hits in a winning cause for Elimville. Elimville 5 Kirkton 3 Steve Francis' two-run homer in the fifth inning broke a 1-1 deadlock and John Kernick added another run in the fifth inning and Elimville held off a rally by Kirkton in the sixth to win the final game of the series and advance to further W.O.A.A. play. Steve Francis, Doug Cooper and Jamie Chaffe led Elimville in the final game with two hits each. The Elimville team now meets the winner of the Baden-St. Marys series in W.O.A.A. and opens their O.A.S.A. playdowns in St. Marys on Thursday and are at home (Kirkton) to meet St. Marys Friday at 7.00 p.m. Exeter Saveway were in action twice this 1past week, edging Ailsa Craig 5-4 in nine innings and dropping a 4-1 decision to Lieury Jets. They are in action twice this week. On Tuesday they travelled to Lieury to play West Corners while on Thursday they go to Nairn to play a double-header to end the season. Playoffs are to start the week of the 20th. Saveway s Ailsa Craig 4 Tuesday night Exeter Saveway edged Ailsa Craig 5-4 in nine innings. Saveway opened the scoring in the first inning with three runs as Doug Pearson walked Brian Hodgins singled, and Paul McKnight singled. Ailsa Craig scored one run in the second, one in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to ,take a 4-3 lead. Exeter then tied the score in the top of the seventh as Kim McKinnon singled, stole second and came around to score on an error. They scored the winning run in the ninth as Dan Heywood walked and scored as Dave Watson singled. Brian Hodgins picked up the win, allowing six hits while striking out nine batters. Ron Davidson toiled for Ailsa Craig allowing ten hits while striking out one batter. Lieury Jets 4 Saveway 1 On Thursday night, Lieury Jets beat Saveway 4-1. Derwyn Hodgins tossed a two hitter for the Jets. Lieury scored one run in the Steelers win Mercer play After their recent con- troversial and void game against South London, Huron County's Lakeport Steelers faced Central, Lambton Peewees in Mercer Cup Soccer action at Petrolia on Saturday. This was a first round encounter for both teams, and the Steelers brought off a comfortable 8-1 victory. Joe Mommersteeg scored half the Lakeport goals, skipper Greg Ryan had two scores, and Dave Scott and Robbie Mennen added singles. The Steelers take on Sarnia sometime next week- end in round two of this year's International Mercer Cup competition. The Huron team are also involved in a major provincial invitational tournament next weekend. The local players will be competing with all-star teams from Chatham, Kitchener-Waterloo, Ottawa, Sarnia and Windsor. Lakeport are still alive in this season's Ontario Cup. Fulop said the Huron- Perth final between the Tigers and Clinton Colts is expected to start Friday in Dashwood, move to Clinton on Sunday and back if necessary, to Dashwood on Tuesday evening. Previous to the playoffs the Tigers enjoyed a busy weekend as they played three games in a tournament first inning as Ron Morley was hit and Derwyn Hodgins singled. They went ahead 4-0 in the third inning as Darrel Hodgins and Derwyn Hodgins both hit triples. Richard Schilbe broke up Derwyn Hodgins no-hitter. Brian Hodgins toiled fOr Saveway allowing ten hits while striking out nine batters. Derwyn Hodgins struck out 14 batters while allowing two hits. held the previous week in Petrolia. S.P.A.R,K. youngsters are heading for the Pinery Provincial Park today (Wednesday) for a day long program with the Pinery staff. The 7-12 year olds will be staying on at the Park for an overnight camp-out and will return home tomorrow (Thursday) around 4:00 p.m. Both S.P.A.R.K. and Dashwood playground youngsters were treated to Andrew Forgraves Super- Duper Woofle 'dust magic show on Tuesday. Mr. Forgrave is a travelling "Magician" from the Owen Sound area who visits local playgrounds. On Friday the S.P.A.R.K. group are finishing off their summer program with a special graduation picnic. Congratulations goes to the Dashwood playground staff and youngsters who won first prize in the service club section for their float in the Friedsburg Days parade. Their float depicted the fairy tale "Snow White and Seven Dwarfs. " The prize money will certainly come in handy for summer's end special events. The Dashwood playground is holding a barbecue this Friday at 7 p.m. at the Dash- wood pavilion to round out their summer program. All Dashwood playground members and their families are welcome to attend the barbecue, and the youngsters will be displaying some of the craft articles that they made over the summer. With summer quickly coming to a close, the Stephen neighbourhood nursery is starting to prepare for their school season. The Nursery is looking for an old chest of drawers or old wardrobe dresser, so if anyone is planning on throwing any of these articles out please give us a call at the Resource Centre at 228-6302 and we'll come and get it from you. The Nursery is also looking for craft supplies for the coming year so hang on to your plastic bottles, egg cartons, toilet paper rolls etc. Session 3 at Huron Park pool is now underway with lots of spaces open for ther. Bruijns threw a four hitter to gain the victory. The Tigers collected six hits off of Woodslee pitching. In their third game, Dash- wood could not hold onto a three run lead going into the bottom of the seventh and lost 5-4 to Leamington. The tomato towners picked 11 hits including eight off of losing pitcher Stover. Dashwood managed eight hits including three by Parsons and two by Hern. lessons, Anyone wanting to register should call 228-6302 or drop by the pool and sign up. Moms, don't forget we're offering "Aquafitness", an adult exercise and learn-to- swim program from 1:30 to 2:00 daily. For anyone interested in softball, the Huron Park Opti-Mrs. pee wees will be participating in the pee wee "B" championship tour- nament to be held in Exeter on Saturday, Come on out and cheer the girls on to a victory! Also for softball fans, the 1979 Canadian Senior Ladies Fastball Championships are being held in Milverton, August 22-26 with 13 teams trying for the national championship. Two teams from Ontario will be taking part in the tournament, Agincourt will be representing the province of Ontario and the "Milverton Suns" are acting as the host team. Weekly passes are available for the tournament and day passes are available at the gate. Women plan monkey golf Lois Snell topped the ""A" flight in the regular weekly women's night play at Exeter Golf Course this week. Janie McDowell was tops in the "B" class, while Helen Wasnidge took top honors in Rena McLean and Edna Busche tied with 15 points each. A monkey golf tournament will be held by the ladies on August 21. There will be lunch and the annual penny sale, Anyone wishing to play is asked to call Dorothy Marks or Fran Mickle.
