GET IT GOING — The Kirkton midgets were trying hard to
get a rally going in the last inning, but couldn't and ended
up on the sidelines after losing 5-0 in the semi-finals of their
tournament, Monday. The boys eagerly watch the batter,
but he went down swinging.

The results from the

Ladies' Singles: first-Fran

Mens' Singles: first-Randy
Parsons, second-Dave

Last week, some Exeter
members travelled to Hyde
Park for an evening of tennis
under the lights. Both the
ladies and the men enjoyed
this exchange. Hopefully, we
can get lights for our courts
soon so that we can use our
facilities at the best times for
tennis.

Tip of the Week,
Tip of the "Weak"
There is no reason to have
a weaker backhand than you
would like. However, many
players try to use a unique
•
In what could be termed as
a fine example, director of
the South Huron Rec Centre
Ian Smith had the low gross
in the A flight at Ironwood
Golf Course Tuesday.
Smith carded a 34 with six
pars and two birdies in his
round.
Low net winner in the A
flight was Paul Van Gerwen
with a 31.
In the B division, Gord
Ross had a 41 for low gross
while Mark Cronyn took the
Martin DeBruyn and Al
Hem were scorers in Exeter
Centennials' 3-1 win over
Lucan in Ausable district
soccer, Sunday.
Exeter's goals were all
sent in during the first half, • with centre-forward
DeBruyn scoring at 10 and 30
to bracket a single from
right-winger Al Hern at the
15-minute mark.
Lucan's only tally on their
home ground was scored by
Richard Acres at 27 minutes
stroke instead of one in a
textbook.
By following the tips from
last week, especially the grip
change, anyone can hit a
solid backhand, if they are
willing to do a little work.
If you can hit backhands
with topspin, hit highs 2'-5'
over the net and deep into the
other side, usually
crosscourt.
If you can't hit a topspin
stroke in a situation, settle
for a safely hit sliced or flat
shot, preferably deep again.
Hit your stronger stroke on
shots which come down the
middle on your side.
By working at it, you'll be
able to hit consistently
strong shots from both sides,
which makes you a hard
opponent to beat.
Experiment with a topspin
shot as you get better.
Next week we'll look at the
use of spin so that you can
prevent your opponent from
doing any of things that
they've read about in these
columns.
low net title with a 32.
Wayne Parkinson with a 34
took low gross honours in C
flight while for low net Joe
Bailey and Jon Gaiser each
had 32.
Brad Murray had 46 to
take low gross D honours
while Bill Mercer had a 30 to
take the low net section.
In the junior division
Wayne Parsons 39 was good
enough for top spot.
Closest to the pin Tuesday

of the second, a half in which
LUcan began playing the ball
long in attempts to work out
of their own end.
The Centennials played
well at every position, and
got another of a series of fine
performances from winger
Al Hern.
Exeter's next game is at
home against Grand Bend
Colonials, this season's
league leaders. Game time is
4 p.m. at Canner's field this
