Tennis Tip of the Week
The objective of hitting a
basic forehand groundstroke
(from the baseline)
Hit the ball deep into your
opponent's court, preferably
into the last few feet.
Hit the ball between two
and six feet over the net (for
depth and for safety)
Hit to your opponents
weaker stroke) usually the
backhand.
Be patient: most points
are lost,, not won. The con-
sistent player will beat the
impatient "slugger" almost
every time.
Wait for a weak return by
your opponent before trying
to hit the risky "winner".
Experience will tell you
when to gamble and when to
use caution.
Centennials
get draw
Exeter Centennials and
Huron Park drew 2-2 in
Ausable district soccer at
Canner's field, Sunday.
Glen McLaughlin led for
the'Park at 15 minutes of the
opening half, with right-
winger Al Hern bringing
Exeter back witty goal five
minutes later.
In the second, Dave
Burbank caught the Cen-
tennials flat with a score off
a free-kick at 55 minutes,
after Exeter had missed on a
couple of smart drives up the
centre.
The Centennials' tie goal.
then came at 75 minutes,
with centre-forward Martin
DeBruyn collecting the
score.
The clubs were tightly
even throughout one of the
better games played locally
this season. They each had a
good share of chances off
their attacks, and both
Huron Park and Exeter
received fine goalkeeping to
meet them. The Park getting
it from Rich Helm, and the
Centennials from Paul Van
Esbroeck.
The league is idle this
coming weekend. On August
5, the Centennials play away
at Lucan at 6 p.m., while
Huron Park hosts Taxandria
at 2 p.m. In other games,
Forest is at Grand Bend at 2
p.m., and West Williams is at
Nairn at 6 p.m.

place tie with the Clinton
Colts in the Huron-Perth
senior baseball league as
they downed the Clinton club

The Tigers wind up the
regular season this week.
They met Crediton last
night, travel to London to
play the high flying Byron
juniors tonight, Wednesday
and play • host to the
Walsingham Senators in an
exhibition game Friday at 8
p.m.
The Walsingham team has
a number of veterans who
have been keeping the
Senators strong in Ontario
senior circles for more than
10 years. These include
pitchers Larry Quick and
Terry Helmer and catcher
Wade Underhill.
The Huron-Perth annual
all-star game will be played
Wednesday, August 1 at
Labatt Park in London with
the London and district
junior all-stars supplying the
opposition. Game time is 8
p.m.
The Tigers wasted little
time in reaching the
scoreboard against Clinton
Friday. They scored three
times in the first inning and
came right back with four
more in the second.
Back to b ack home runs
by John Bruijns and Jim
Guenther provided' the
power for the Dashwood first
inning uprising.
Jim Guenther led the Tigers
at the plate with three home
runs and a single in five
official trips to the plate.
Guenther's second home
run blast came in the second
frame with the bases loaded.

the grand stammer.
Home runs continued to

The Mitchell Fish and
Game Club was the site of a
large team skeet shoot,
Sunday, which drew shooters
from London to Goderich,
Seven teams participated in
the blistering heat as a large
crowd of spectators wat-
,ched,
The shoot, which has come
to be an annual event at the
club, has grown from only
three teams in four years.
This shows the interest
which is growing steadily in
organized shooting.
The number of club
members is up for many
reasons. Many people have
joined to put their support
behind groups fighting for
our right to own firearms,
others, to get away from
"things" for a while every
week or because their friend
or neighbours talked them
into trying the sport.
Whatever the reason, the
important thing is that they
did join and have discovered
that shotgun shooting is fun.
Whether it be trap or skeet',
they have found enjoyment
in their regular shoots and
special fun in these shoots
where they visit other clubs
to meet new friends.
Many other people have
discovered that their fears of
shotguns were unfounded.
Today's guns and loads when
properly matched to the
shooter are a joy to shoot.
Although some guns do
"kick" badly--usually
single shots most do not, so
once their equipment is
properly matched the fun
begins.
Not even handicaps should
deter people wanting to
shoot, I know several good
shots who have only one eye,
another shooter who has only
one arm and one who shoots
from a wheelchair.
Weight and build make no
difference, Children only 8 or
9 years have become sur-
prisingly good shots. One
lady shooter from Oshawa,
weighs a scant 100 pounds
and regularly shoots 400
targets a week end. Another
man who weighs over 300
pounds is a top notch
shooter.
There are also a large
number of shooters who have
had heart attacks shooting so
as you can see anyone can
shoot and enjoy the com-
petitions just like the people
at Mitchell.
In Sunday's shoot each
team member shooter shot
50 targets to give the team a
total of 250.
This year's shoot, which
included two teams from the
Claybird gun club, two from
the Goderich gun club and
one each from Kippen,
Mitchell and London, was
the closest yet.
When thefirst rounds were
over-125 targets-there were
only five targets separating
the top four teams. The
Goderich number 1 team
was leading with 109, London
was second with 106, Mit-
chell followed with 105 and
the Claybird number 1 team
was fourth with 104,
At that point it was evident
that anyone could win. The
Claybird number 1 team
upped their score by two.
The Goderich number 1 team
got off to a bad start but held
on to get a 108.
London came up with the
best round of the day--114- to
get a good lead which Mit-
chell couldn't catch even
though they beat their first
round by four targets,
High individual gun of the
day went to Bill Boussey
with a 49. Runner ups with 46
each were John Hessels,
Tom Russel and Calvin
Christie.
Getting 25 straight were
Stan Woriters; Bill Boussey,
Calvin Christie and Tom
Russel.
A lot of, credit should be
given to the Kippen team as
they showed a lot of sport-
smanship in participating.
Kippen is a trap shooting
club and there shooters have
shot very little skeet and I
congratulate them for their
efforts.
The final scores are as
