Main Street 235-1570 East Williams graduation Ely JOY SCHEIFELE The East Williams Public School was filled to capacity June 26, as friends and families attended the special graduation exercises of the grade eight class, Thirty-two students moved on up to high school level in the 27th annual graduation. Ellen Whitmore, Ailsa Craig, a custom officer, was the guest speaker for the event. She encouraged the students to live up to their full potential and also ad- vised them to carefully check the courses they plan to study with an eye to the future. Wendy Brunner of R.R. 1 Ailsa Craig was this year's valedictorian. In her speech she outlined the many good times as well as things learned throughout the year. She was awarded the Mary. E. Ross Award by Mary Ross of Nairn for her high academic standing and all around achievements. The East Williams School Award was presented to Marta Brunner, Wendy Currie and Jennifer Toews for their general proficiency in academic studies, music, athletics and services rendered. In presenting the awards Grade 7 teacher Mr. G. Welshman, noted that in the past four years, only 8 of these awards have been presented including the three he was presenting that evening. The grade 8 choir also gave three special numbers led by music teacher, Mrs. P. Schram. A duet, "Born Free", was sung by Cindy Hooper and Dean Bender. Principal Mr, G. Stott and grade 8 teacher Mrs. E. Nicholls awarded each of the students with their diplomas making mention of each student's contributions throughout the year as he was handed his certificate. As one entered the auditorium baby pictures of all the grade 8 class decorated one wall, and colourful decorations filled the auditorium which were made by the grade 7 class and were of unusually high standards. Graduating students in- cluded Jonathon Arnel, Stephen Aszalos, Anita Beaushaw, Dean Bender, Wendy Brunner, Wendy Currie, Jennifer Davies, Diana Dixon, Ingrid Doek, Jim Fletcher, Matthew Furmstrum, Jay Jay Hache, Cindy Hooper, Michael Hutchinson, Elizabeth Ingham, Kelly McFadden, Kim McFadden, Brian McLaughlin, Mary McLaughlin, Steve McLeish, Bonnie McFee, Mike Mit- chell, Kenton Otterbein, Murray Ravelle, Jeff Rock, Kendall Rowley, Jim Simp- son, Connie Thomson, Jennifer Toews, Blair Tweddle, Debbie Watson and Mary Anne Watson. The Home and School Association served refresh- ments following the programme. By JOY SCHEIFELE Committees are meeting and telephones are buzzing in Ailsa Craig these days as plans are being finalized for the events during Gala Days July 20 to 22, Several new events are being scheduled including bed races down Main Street Sunday afternoon so don't throw out those set of wheels you may need them yet. Also a pie eating contest shows up on the list of events and rumour has it that the Ailsa Craig Town Council is get- ting in shape to challenge the surrounding Town Councils! Not to be outdone we hear the volunteer fire brigade are doing some extra duty these days as they plan to take on Parkhill in a water hockey game, Sunday af- ternoon. Chairman of the Sports Events, Ted Van Weert, has some mighty interesting games coming up. Ever play baseball with a Nerf ball? And if that doesn't just tickle your fancy, we understand he's borrowing an unusual ball not normally found among the family's sports equipment. It measures no less than eight feet in diameter! Other team sporting events will include a pole climb and a game called "flour power". Or if you prefer to work alone, you can always try the "Soccer Kick". and the Legion Ladies will be happy to in- clude you in on a game of Bingo Saturday afternoon. Many of the former events are being re-scheduled. Old and young have been spotted turtle hunting. Some have even been seen in serious conversation with their turtles priming them for the big races. Blair Stewart will again organize the road races which was one of the highlights last year with outstanding runners of all ages coming from many distant points. These will be taking place again Sunday afternoon with the runners doing 10 kilometers from Ailsa Craig to Nairn and back again. Phil Miller is organizing children's road races of shorter distances. Pet owners are advised that even the "mutts" are not being overlooked. The Mutt Show is being planned for Sunday afternoon also. If you like Old Time Fiddle Music and Step Dance a Jamboree will begin at 1.30 Saturday. Leroy Walker, organizer of this event, emphasizes that this is not a competition, but simply a time of fiddle music and dancing. Anyone interested in taking' part in the Jam- boree is asked to get in touch with him, Nor is the variety Show a competetive one which will set the Gala Days in motion on Friday evening. Once again an exciting parade is being planned for Saturday afternoon with entries still be invited. Other repeats will include the Saturday: evening beef barbecue, Sunday morning "Breakfast In the Park," and the Sunday evening chicken barbecue. The community worship service will be held Sunday morning in' the Ailsa Craig United Church this year. "The Revelations" from London will be featured at the Gospel Sing Sunday, evening. Lyle and Isabell Stokes have been chosen to act as this year's Grand Master and Lady. To climax the weekend, Ailsa Craig's own Bev Gale will be here from Toronto to sing "0 Canada" in the closing ceremonies. The Torch of Friendship will again be lit as Gala Days conclude, Times-Advocate, July 4, 1979 Pugs 5
