The Citizen, 2007-12-20, Page 22North Huron councillor Greg McClinchey had another hat on for a time at the Dec. 11 meeting. McClinchey is involved with Project Porchlight, a non-partisan organization that is attempting to convince people to replace one regular bulb with the new energy example. If every household in Ontario does this, he said, it’s the equivalent of taking 66,000 cars of the road. McClinchey distributed new lightbulbs to council, media and people present in the gallery. As well he left a number of them in the township office. “I encourage people to come in and get them.” There was concern expressed about the fact that the new bulbs had mercury and lead in them, which would eventually be a landfill problem. McClinchey agreed, but said the bulbs will soon be mandated, so it is imperative that governments at all levels find and institute programs to handle the waste. PAGE 22. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2007.North Huron council agreed at itsDec. 11 meeting to make anexception regarding the township’s procurement policy. A request had been received from Belgrave Community Centre board asking council to consider waiving the policy with regards to the electrical work planned for the community centre. Reeve Neil Vincent said that a local contractor had been consulted regarding the required candle power and potential savings. “He has more or less made a committment to do the work basically at cost. He is not charging for the study,” said Vincent. He added that through thegrapevine he has heard others arewilling to volunteer their time toassist him. “It is a communityeffort.” Deputy-reeve Murray Scott said this contractor had been involved “since day one”. With most of council familiar with the contractor and his work there were no concerns and little discussion before passing the recommendation. (Shawn Loughlin photo) At the Dec. 17 meeting, North Huron council approved a recommended to enter into a joint tender agreement with South Bruce for calcium chloride. The financial implications, according to director of public works Ralph Campbell should be a savings of approximately $4,738.80 in the 2008 budget. The tender is for a total of 1,350 tonnes of calcium chloride. North Huron requires 165 tonnes. By booking now, they will have a fixed budget figure for next year. Da-Lee Dust Control of Goderich and Stoney Creek offered a 10 per cent reduction from the 2007 cost if the township booked their 2008 requirements before the end of the year. This will mean a savings of $28.72 per flake metric tonne. If, through the competitive process a municipality in the vicinity of North Huron received a lower price Da-Lee would honour it as well. This would be offered to all parties on the South Bruce joint tender. The municipalities involved in the tender are South Bruce, Howick, Morris-Turnberry, Huron-Kinloss and North Huron.
