Blyth welcomed a new resident and a new business over from its neighbour Brussels a month ago when Davara Studio officially opened its doors. Davara Studio, at the corner of Queen and Westmoreland Streets, started as a hobby that grew into a business out of a renovated garage in Brussels, and now, a full-blown studio and workshop on Blyth’s main street producing original glass, clay and wood creations. While they were happy to get up and running before Christmas, Dave and Tamara Riach say that they have a lot of work to do over the holidays to replenish stock. Right now, because of the move and their day jobs, they are nowhere close to 100 per cent with their stock. With Dave working as a clinic manager in Varna and Tamara working at Wescast in Wingham, they have their hands full as it is, leading to why they are only open on Saturdays. Their new space in Blyth enabled them to move from Brussels lock, stock and barrel. Their new studio adjoins a house, giving them enough room to live and to set up a spacious workshop which connects to the actual display area of the studio. The Riachs have been operating Davara Studio since last Christmas. It began out of Dave’s woodworking, something he has done all his life, and then hobbywork in the stained glass and clay areas. Last Christmas, the Riachs renovated the garage at their former residence in Brussels to operate as a workshop and showroom for their creations. Once they had decided to take pottery and stained glass more seriously, they took night classes and worked hard to know all they could about their new trade. This Saturday will be their fourth Saturday open in Blyth. The Riachs are happy with their new place in Blyth, saying that while it’s still a little hectic finishing the move and replenishing stock, Blyth is where they want to be. Once they opened, they joined the Blyth Business Association and they Continued on page 21 Davara Studio puts roots down in Blyth Welcome Davara Studio is in Blyth for the long haul now. Dave and Tamara Riach, working hard in the workshop seen through a window in the showroom, have moved here and plan to open their studio every Saturday from now on. They offer dozens of original stained glass, clay and wood creations. (Shawn Loughlin photo) JOHN D. PENNINGTON HEATING AND COOLING LTD.
