Each year the parent council and volunteers put on a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings. One of the original organizers Dianne Diehl said the lunch hour is extended on that day so that 200 plus children can load their plates and return to class well fed and turkey dinner sleepy. The idea for the dinner came up about six years ago. “A few of us were talking about what we could do for the kids that would be special, that they could enjoy and remember,” said Diehl. When it was decided that a festive meal might be the answer discussions and planning began. Parents were contacted regarding donations of food or money and the response was great, said Diehl. This year, organizer Tracey Swart said they have decided to go with monetary donations towards the food. Any remaining costs are picked up by the council. The beverage is supplied by the school. This year, 217 are expected to partake of the meal. “The parent involvement is amazing,” said Swart. Preparations begin the day before, with much of the work being done in the school kitchen. “There are about 20 parents there to help serve and clean up,” said Swart. For those involved, seeing howwell received the dinner is, makes the effort more than worthwhile. “Some of these kids may not get a sit-down turkey dinner. They just love it,” said Diehl. “When we began this it was to do something neat, something that would be different. When we did it the first time and saw how well it went over we just had to keep doing it. Everyone enjoyed it so much,” Diehl said. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2007. PAGE 11. Tradition continues For six years the parents of Grey Central Public School students have treated the children to a traditional festive meal. The idea came up when a group of parents had discussions about what they could do for the children that would be special during the holiday season. The community-owned company, which publishes The Citizen,The Rural Voice and Stops Along the Way visitors’ guide, had a profit of $6,600 for the year ending Sept.30. Company president Keith Roulston told shareholders that key to the profit were special issues such as the Brussels Homecoming issue. On the other hand, continuing postage increases have plagued operations of The Rural Voice. On the operational side, he reported that the transition to totally digital production was completed during spring, with the newspaperbeing produced totally on computersand pages electronically transmittedto the printing plant. This meant the end of all use of film and photographic chemicals and closing down of the company’s last darkroom. Elected to the board of directors for the coming year were Sheila Richards and Hank Ten Pas of Brussels, Lois van Vliet of Blyth and Jill and Keith Roulston.
