The Blyth Kings hosted their latest game against the Seaforth Bantam team on Saturday, Dec. 15. Murray Dale covered the net for the Kings and did a great job keeping his team in the game. In the first period the shrimp line, made up of first-year Bantam players, made a great display of teamwork to score a goal for the Kings. Wingers Derek deBoer and Alex Sanders worked the ball up the ice and took some shots on the Seaforth goalie. Persistence paid off and centre Wyatt Bearss chipped the ball into the Seaforth net and scored for Blyth. When digging for the ball, Blyth’s assistant captain, took an accidental slash to the ankle bone and was unable to play the rest of the game. Four minutes into the second period, Blyth received a penalty and Seaforth took advantage of the power play and scored to tie the game. Despite valiant efforts neither team could sneak in a goal for the remainder of the game, which ended 1-1. Broomball Kings play to tie It will be a hall of fame holiday in Blyth as many of its past stars will make their way back to the village for a hockey reunion game on Dec. 28. The All-Ontario Pee Wee team from 1972/1973 will be taking on the championship Bantam squad from 1992/1993 to raise some money for Blyth Minor Hockey and for the players to have a little fun while they’re at it. Former NHLer Bob Probert, formerly of the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks will be joining the 72/73 squad. That, and experience, give the 72/73 squad the edge says member Tom Pollard, who has been looking forward to the game for a while. “I guess I don’t get out much, but I’m looking forward to this like a little kid looks forward to Christmas. I can’t wait,” he said. The game will take place at the Blyth Community Centre at 7 p.m. and there will be many other fundraisers going on to raise money for Blyth minor hockey along with the abundance of familiar faces coming back for the game. All 16 living members of the 72/73 squad should be at the game next week. They will be missing Charlie Bromley, the general manager of the club, who passed away years ago. “Jack Lee, who refereed most of our games back in our championship year, will be there to drop the first puck, so that’s pretty special too,” Pollard said. Pollard says players will be descending on Blyth from as far away as Calgary, Alberta, to Sudbury, to Sarnia, as well as Toronto and London for the big game. Shutout The Brussels netminder shut the door on this and any other shot he saw last Thursday night, earning the shutout with a 4-0 win over Blyth in Midget Rep action. The game turned ugly in the final minutes as tempers got the best of some of the players and sorting out the penalty minutes led to the game hitting curfew before it could end naturally. (Shawn Loughlin photo) This past week saw the Brussels Atom Reps take on Wallace. It was a hard-fought 5-1 victory for Brussels. With Brussels hammering 18 shots at the net, Logan Kellington, Mitch Kellington, Nic Zwep, and Tim Waechter scored for their team. Assists went to Waechter, the Kellingtons and Lexi Smith. Strong defence came from Hayden TenPas, Reece McArter, Colton Hastings, Luke McCutcheon and Scott Dolmage. Goalie Matt McNichol made an impressive 11 saves.
