while we’re definitely saying it’s
welcome, we have some concerns
that it’s not going to address the
fundamental issues. The province
can be thanked for addressing the
fundamental issues with RMP, but
the log jam is still the federal
government for refusing to
participate in RMP.”
With the provincial government
recently coming on board with an
RMP program, Thompson says they
can’t be faulted, but that the Federal
government is the real problem.
“The underlying issue is that this
all could have been avoided if the
provincial government and the
federal government would haveadopted a program similar to theU.S. Farm Bill years ago,” he said. “Basically, we’re saying that if theFederal government was sincere, they’d get on board with an RMP
program, so that hog and livestock
farmers could at least get some
money through their farm-fed grains
the same way their counterparts in
the U.S. are.”
Thompson says that because of the
U.S. farm bill, Canada’s neighbours
to the south are in much better shape
with the dollar issue due to their
equity because they’ve had the
funding for years.
Thompson admits that the funding
is still very new and he isn’t as well-
versed with it as he would like, but
as he understands it, one major
stipulation in the funding application
may make it tough to take advantage
of this latest figure.
“One of the conditions would be
that hog farmers or cattle farmers
have at least 50 per cent of that
commodity. Now that causes a realproblem,” he said. “Let’s say that afarmer has a hog farm and he growssoy beans as well, the differencebetween qualifying and notqualifying could be as little as awagon-full of soy beans sitting in his
shed. So even though the funding is
a good announcement, the 50 per
cent stipulation is going to cause
oodles of strife and grief.”
Thompson insists that despite the
funding, the future is bleak for these
sectors if no RMP program is
implemented by the Federal
government and no changes are
made.
