The Citizen, 2007-12-13, Page 14PAGE 14. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2007.Bernard Murray, currently servinghis first term at the head of aprovincial lobby organization for
Catholic school trustees, will now
step into a leadership role with
which he has much familiarity.
The representative for Perth South
and West Perth was acclaimed to the
position of chair of the Huron-Perth
Catholic District School Board, at
the board’s 2007-08 inaugural
meeting Monday, Dec. 10.
Murray, who recently moved with
his wife from his family’s farm to
Stratford, is indeed familiar with the
post. He has served several terms as
chair of the board, which carried on
a tradition of annually switching
leadership roles between its five
members.
He takes over from outgoing chair
Ron Marcy of Stratford. No other
nominations for the 2007-08
position were received.
Following the acclamation,Murray told fellow trustees he wouldbe “delighted” to serve again. But headded he expects his experience aschair might be different this timearound, due to the insights he has
gathered over the past few years as
he became more involved with the
Ontario Catholic School Trustees
Association (OCSTA).
Murray was elected president of
that organization earlier this year.
“My experiences in Toronto, at the
provincial level, have stressed to me
the good things that happen at
Huron-Perth – the things that make
me proud of this board.”
Speaking to the media following
the meeting, Murray predicted the
most important challenge the board
– and other boards across the
province – will face over the coming
year is the negotiation of new
collective bargaining agreements
with teachers and other employee
groups. The three-year deals expire
in 2008.
The Huron-Perth board and its“coterminous” counterpart, the AvonMaitland District School Board, willalso be pressured to iron out detailsof their provincially-mandatedtransportation consortium, he said.
The consortium has been launched
and preliminary meetings have been
held, but the tough work lies ahead:
negotiating a contract between the
two boards for working together as
closely as possible on student bus
routes.
“A lot still has to be worked out”
on the consortium, Murray said,
before it’s sent to the Education
Ministry for approval.
Also acclaimed at the Dec. 10
meeting was vice chair Vince
McInnes of North Perth/Perth
East/North Huron. Jim McDade of
northwest Huron will chair the
Education committee, Marcy takes
over as Management chair, and Mike
Miller of Bluewater/South Huron
assumes responsibilities on the
Personnel committee.

Blyth Printing
Murray Catholic bd. chairBy Stew SlaterSpecial to The Citizen
From an initial printing of 500,
only about 100 copies remain of a
new book detailing the history of the
Huron-Perth Catholic District
School Board.
The book, entitled “Our Roots …
Our Story,” was compiled from
contributions from about 25
different authors plus numerous
photographs, and aimed to capture
the memory of every Catholic
school in the histories of the two
counties.
It was officially launched by the
board Nov. 1, and can be purchased
by calling the board’s Dublin
headquarters at (519) 345-2440.
“There are people calling for it
every day, still,” commented
executive assistant Elaine De Corte
following the board’s 2007-08
inaugural meeting on Monday, Dec.
10.
She noted many retired teachers
have purchased copies, or else their
family members have decided “Our
Roots … Our Story” would be an
ideal Christmas present. One copy is
even on its way to Hong Kong,
where a former Huron-Perth
Catholic teacher now works.
De Corte added other people
became interested after learning
about the presence in the book of a
photo of themselves or a school they
attended.
“It’s all about the memories,”
commented Perth South/West Perth
trustee Bernard Murray, who was
named board chair at the meeting.
“It’s good for us, now, to have a
record that far back. It’s like with
family memories. It’s always a
terrible thing when you find a photo
from generations ago and you don’t
know who’s in it.
“That won’t happen for us now.”
