It’s been a busy year for building in Morris-Turnberry with $4.9 million worth of buildings and additions, acting chief building official Dave Black told councillors at their Dec. 4 meeting. Eight houses and 40 projects including additions and decks totalled $2.1 million worth of construction. Twelve barns or manure storage buildings and 16 agricultural accessory projects such as grain bins and sheds were built with a value of $2.1 million. In addition there was $477,000 worth of commercial constructions (five projects) and $114,100 worth of industrial construction (six projects), as well as six demolition permits with a value of $12,000. Building permits for agricultural projects brought in $32,370,25 to the municipality while residential permits totalled $20,306. Commercial permits were worth $12,087 and industrial, $1,702. Black noted that his term as acting CBO ends Dec. 31 as additional work with North Huron is expected to take up his available time. Present at the meeting was Terry Kuipers of the Town of Minto who will be building inspector for Turnberry Ward. Kirk Livingston will serve as inspector for Morris Ward. On ice It was exciting hockey action in Blyth this past weekend as the arena was the site of some Atom Silver Stick tournament games. Seaforth defeated Grand Valley 6-0 in this contest played Saturday. (Vicky Bremner photo) Auburn Women’s Institute held the draw for the quilt on Wednesday, Dec. 5. The lucky winner was Don Emmerton of Kincardine. Proceeds from this quilt will go to the cancer society. Thursday, Dec. 13 the Women’s Institute will be holding the annual potluck dinner at 12:30 p.m. at Auburn Memorial Hall. There will be a gift exchange with a $3 value. All members are to bring a friend. If not they will have to sing a song, do a recitation or pay a fine. Rev. Dave Woods will be the guest speaker for the meeting. Dec. 16 the Longest Night Service at Londesborough United Church will be at 7 p.m. This is to remember a loved one by lighting a candle. Dec. 24 is the Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m. at Londesborough United Church. In Thursday’s Belgrave curling atthe Wingham Curling Club, NielEdgar gave Murray Shiell a lesson inrock control as he racked up a one-sided 9-1 victory. In the other rock action it was Fred Meier 7, John Nixon 4; Murray McNichol 8, Lloyd Michie 3; Tim Coultes 9, Don Shiell 5. *** In Friday night action Lynn Hickey hit the win column with a 9- 8 victory over Barry Simpson while Bill McDonald edged Kyle Forster 6- 5 in a close one. *** In ladies’ Tuesday rock action scores were a little one-sided this week. Amy Miller rocked to an 11-4 win over Jenn Elston. In the other game Sue Fair up-ended Mary Henry to the tune of 9-3. I understand Sue is off to the Maritimes to spend Christmas with son Craig who is starring in a Christmas extravaganza on the east coast. ***In the Tuesday competitive league,action was close this week. AartDeVos downed Don Edgar 7-4 whilebrother Bill DeVos was on the short end of a 9-5 struggle with Calvin Ruttan. Earl Fitch eked out a 7-6 win over Rus Taylor while Shawn Cottrill was a 7-5 winner over Rob Middleton. *** In the Wednesday mixed league both Hortons went down to defeat as Steve Burke was an 8-5 winner over Byron Horton and dad Wayne was on the wrong end of an identical score in a game with Tammy Adams. The other two games were decided by a single rock as Earl Fitch edged Aart DeVos 6-5 and Dean Newson was a 9-8 winner over John Dailleboust. *** In the Wednesday mixed league Kayla Bishop continued her winning ways with a 10-3 victory over Mike Cottrill. Her dad Kevin lost 9-6 toBill McDonald. On the other ice padsit was Phillip Eadie 9, Cam Alton 6and Kyle Forster 7, Doug Miller 4.*** Snow and blocked roads cancelled Monday daytime curling action. In Thursday morning action there were two close games as Jim Coultes defeated Stewart Leedham 6-3 and with three in the eighth and Irving Elliott stole a 6-5 victory over Bob Johnston. The other games were runaway scores as Ross Peacock counted a big six in the third end for a 13-5 win over Ivan Dow. Mac Inglis was hot with a score equal to two converted touchdowns and kept opponent Les Shaw to three – a score equal to a field goal. Afternoon action was close with results being: Norm Fairles 8, John Mann 3; Wendell Stamper 8, Bruce Robertson 7 and Bill Deans 7, Nelson Frank 4.
