While all three games saw some spectactor skating, passing, clean body checks and all around teamwork, Brussels was not able to net any victories. The first game saw them facing Grand Valley. Brussels made an impressive 27 shots on net. Goalie Matt McNichol made an amazing 36 saves. The second game saw them facing Seaforth. Again it was an amazing display of teamwork. The game was neck and neck all the way through. Lexi Smith was able to break through the Seaforth barriers at the end of the second period to start a 1-0 lead. The third period was more battling but Brussels was unsuccessful in getting a win. Again, Brussels made 21 shots, while McNichol saved 23 shots on the Brussels net. The third and final game for Brussels was played in Blyth against Shallow Lake. This time, Brussels made 17 shots on net, while Shallow Lake had 13. The lone Brussels goal in this game was made by Mitch Kellington, assisted by Smith and Tim Waechter. The kids had an interesting time playing against Wingham. Each team received pizza and pop after their first game, along with a 50th anniversary commemorative pin. The Blyth Icedogs had a busy week of broomball with two games and a practice. The first game was played in Seaforth on Dec. 5. The first period saw the ball being dribbled up and down the ice, but neither team was able to score a goal. The second period saw the Blyth Icedogs’ keeper Graham Bedard, make some great saves, but he couldn’t keep the Stealers away from the net. Seaforth’s Brad VanBakel intercepted a Blyth pass and scored the first goal of the night. Kevin Cronin widened the lead and scored for the Seaforth Stealers, on a breakaway. With only minutes left in the game, Seaforth’s Scott Ford scored after Blyth pulled their goalie. With some ice time left the teams practised overtime and Cronin got his second goal of the night for Seaforth. The Icedogs finally snuck through Seaforth’s strong defence, when Andy Bollinger shot the ball up to Kris Bjerg who scored Blyth’s lone goal. The final score was 4-1 for the Seaforth Stealers. Coaches Dan Nickel and Brad Vanneste thought their team played a little flat in the second period, getting down on themselves after Seaforth took the lead. The team worked hard at practice on Dec. 7 and their efforts paid off when they played their next game. On Dec. 9, the Icedogs travelled to Mildmay. With only 10 players available they couldn’t complain about not getting ice time. This game saw Blyth making accurate passes and taking more shots on net. Blyth’s Jordon Rinn passed the ball to centre Brent Drost, who was waiting at the point to earn the first goal. Blyth’s second goal came from two defence players. Travis Roetcisoender passed the ball across to Kurtis Kolkman for a hard shot to the top shelf of the Mildmay net. Goalie Derek Logtenberg came out of his crease to challenge the ball for the Icedogs and earned an assist after whacking the ball down the ice so Cody Stute could pick it up and score a breakaway goal. Captain Dan Dery passed the ball across the ice to Bjerg for the final goal of the first period. The Icedogs were ahead 4-0 at halftime. In the second period defender, Nickel passed the ball up the ice to Drost, who took two shots on net before scoring the final goal of the game. Logtenberg played a great game in net for the Icedogs earning a shutout for his team. The coach was pleased with the improvements and hard work his players showed from one game to the next.Tourney time It was tournament action at the Brussels arena this past weekend as broomball teams took to the ice.
