Sympathy is extended to Edythe
Glousher and family in the death of
her husband Stan Glousher who
passed away Dec. 5.
On Saturday, Dec. 8, 58 members
of the Edgar clan gathered at the
Belgrave Institute Hall for their
annual Christmas get-together. A
delicious turkey dinner was
served by the Belgrave Institute
ladies.
Mait and Mary Edgar and family
hosted this year’s event. A flower
arrangement, which was sent by
Mary Lockridge and family of New
Hampshire (Cousins) decorated the
smorgasbord table.
Everyone enjoyed themselves and
the younger ones made the noise
level raise at times as they looked for
Santa out the windows.
Santa finally arrived and gave out
presents to everyone. When you
received your present from Santa
you sat on his knee for a brief chat.
Santa’s knee must be pretty sore
after all those sittings but he never
seems to mind.
After Santa left everyone enjoyed
a game of cards and snacks and
punch.
Special guests were Helen
Stonehouse of Braemar Retirement
Home, Irlma Edgar of Wingham and
Mait and Mary Edgar of Petrolia.
Those attending were from Atwood,
Aylmer, Barrie, Belgrave, Brigden,
Clinton, Goderich, London, Petrolia,
Tavistock and Wingham.
BLYTH UNITED CHURCH
Greeting at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, Dec. 9 were Barb and
Terry Richmond. Ushering were
Brenda Brooks, Nicole Kerr and
Terry Richmond. Guest organist was
Lynda McGregor.
Guest speaker Rev. Sandy Morris
welcomed everyone to church this
second Sunday of Advent. Lorna
Fraser, along with her grandchildren,
lit the candle of hope and the candle
of peace.
The first hymn, Come Thou Long-
expected Jesus, was followed by the
choir anthem, There’s a Star in the
East with Cheryl Cronin singing the
solo parts.
The children went to the front of
the church for their story time. Grant
Sparling read the Minute for
Missions.
Sandy told the kids a story of
Hope and Justice. Hope and Justice
were two birds that had made a nest
and laid their egg in a quiet forest.
The loggers came and the birds
had to leave. The spiders made a
web so that Hope and Justice could
take their egg along with them. They
flew and flew until they found aplace of peace, Jerusalem. When they arrived the egg fell andcracked and a baby bird, Peace, wasborn. Sandy had a prayer of peaceand thank you.The children did the actions to TheLord’s Prayer while thecongregation sang the words. The scripture readings were from
Isaiah 11: 1-10, Romans 15: 45-13
and Matthew 3: 1-12. Psalm 72 was
read responsively.
Sandy read a story she hadreceived on her e-mail. The storywas about a family loading thehorse-drawn wagon with wood, food, shoes and clothing for aneighbour down the road whosefather had died during the year. Thefather had saved money to buy hisson Matt a rifle but had bought shoesand candy for the children at the
neighbours instead. They took the
wagon loaded with wood, food and
clothes to the family and invited
them for Christmas dinner with theirfamily. The next hymn Good ChristianFriends Rejoice was sung. The offering was receivedfollowed. The last hymn Hark theGlad Sound was followed by theBenediction and the singing of GoNow in Peace.Deb Hakkers invited the
congregation to go carol singing
with the children on Saturday night,
Dec. 15 leaving the church at 7 p.m.
The Huron County Health Unit is
offering free vaccine for meningitis.
The vaccine usually costs the public
around $100. It has been given free
to one year olds, Grade 7 students
and high school students since 2005.
The vaccine is being offered to
anyone 2 - 65 years old who has
never had the immunization before.
Only one dose is needed.
Huron County Health Unit public
health nurse Christina Taylor says,
“It is unusual to offer a free vaccine
for meningitis. We’re able to do this
because the vaccine needs to be used
by the end of the year. It's a free
Christmas gift to Huron County
residents.”
Meningococcal disease is caused
by bacteria. It can cause meningitis,
which is a swelling of the lining of
the brain and spinal cord. It can also
cause blood infection. Taylor says it
can be a serious disease causing
death.
Meningitis is spread by coughing,
sneezing, kissing, sharing utensils
and anytime saliva is passed from
one person to another. The
death rates tend to be higher for
teenagers when there is an
outbreak.
The health unit is strongly
encouraging adolescents and
students attending college or
university who haven't had the
vaccine to come in for the free
clinics.
The vaccine provides up to 97 per
cent protection against the most
common form of meningococcal
disease that causes outbreaks.
The clinics will be held at the
health unit in Clinton on Thursday,
Dec. 13 and Friday, Dec. 14 from 9
a.m. to 4 p.m.
For information, call the health
unit at 519-482-3416 or 1-877-837-
6143.
