HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-11-29, Page 27A pig’s lung was just one of the
ways Rebels with a Cause showed
Huron County high school students
the devastating effects of smoking
last week.
It was ACTION Week, (Advocates
Challenging the Tobacco Industry in
Ontario Now). Youth across Ontario
held events to take a stance against
the tobacco industry.
Last Friday was Fresh Air Friday
and Rebels with a Cause asked
students to join them in taking a
deep breath of fresh air to inhale the
truth about the tobacco industry.
Over 2,500 students at Central
Huron Secondary School, St. Anne’s
Catholic Secondary School,
Goderich District Collegiate
Institute and South Huron District
High School took part.
Peer leader Tymen deWeerd from
Central Huron Secondary School
says, “We want Big Tobacco to
know that Huron County youth will
no longer listen to the lies of the
tobacco industry. Every day 130
Canadians die from using tobacco
industry products. Big Tobacco
needs to replace those customers.
Since 90 per cent of all regular
smokers start before the age of 19,
they are targeting us.”
Rebels with a Cause spread this
message in their schools all week.
The youth organized
announcements, skits and displays.
They also used pigs’ lungs to show
the difference between healthy lungs
and smokers’ lungs.
“Young people listen to their
peers,” says Lyndsay Snowe, Youth
Advisor of Rebels with a Cause. “It
is important for us to stand united
against Big Tobacco”.
Rebels with a Cause is a group of
10 youth employed by the Huron
County Health Unit. They are part of
the Youth Action Alliance initiative
of Smoke Free Ontario. Its aim is to
prevent smoking in youth and to
expose how the tobacco industry
directly targets youth to use their
products.

Susan Hay’s multi-mediaimpressionism will be featured on
the Guest artist wall, at the
Goderich Co-op Gallery during
December.
In trying to name her show, she
remembered the CBC radio comedy
show of the same name. That is
exactly how she feels about her art at
present.
“I’ve always been an idea person
but recently my ideas are coming
from all over the map! I’m not ready
to settle down to one medium or
style yet; there are just too many
ideas to explore.”
Hay has been enjoying the
exploration of more styles of
painting than she ever thought
possible in preparing for this show.
For the past decade she has been
honing her skills as a painter of
acrylics and watercolour landscapes
and florals.
Past supporters of her art have
been the late Rev. Willy Ziegler a
trained artist and her minister, and
Flesherton artist
and art educator DeeterHastenteufel.
Recently Hay has had the
opportunity to participate in
workshop and art courses in
Goderich and Haliburton and the
effect has been dramatic.
Her show will feature
impressionistic work on large
canvases, textural work, some
abstracts, a collage and also some
representational work.
Hay has spent 30 years working in
nursing, the last 20 in her husband’s
family medicine office in Clinton.
Her work has decorated these office
walls, and also been entered in
community shows in Goderich,
Grand Bend, and Blyth.
She was one of three artists
featured in The Left Side Gallery in
Flesherton in May, 2006. She is an
active member of the Blyth Festival
Art Gallery committee.
The Goderich Co-op Gallery is
located at 54 The Square and is open
between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. A
working artist is always on duty.
