The Citizen, 2007-11-29, Page 25Huron County’s emergencymedical services (EMS) issuggesting that $500 is too much topay for the former Ashfield councilbuilding.
“They’re using our old office in
Ashfield,” said Ashfield-Colborne-
Wawanosh’s reeve Ben Van
Diepenbeek. “I guess the rent they
were offering to begin with was
$500 a month. But now, they’re
saying that since we don’t supply
them with water, [paper products] or
housekeeping, they’re paying too
much.”
David Lew, the county’s land
ambulance operations manager is
concerned with the building’s water
supply, and has suggested that the
township provide EMS staff with
bottled water. In addition, the
building is not supplied with paperproducts or housekeeping servicesby its owner, and they believe that due to these factors, a reduc-tion in the rental agreement iswarranted. “We haven’t tested the water, sowe do have an onus there, I guess, to
have it tested,” said Van Diepenbeek.
“If they want bottled water, they can
bring it, is the way I feel.”
He suggested to council that,
following conversations with Lew,
the feeling was that it is in the hands
of council to decide what use of the
building is worth. Earlier in the year,
the service proposed rent be
decreased by $200.
“The monthly cost of doing
something like that is very low,” said
councillor Barry Millian.
Council came out in agreement to
a $50 decrease, leaving the buildings
monthly rental cost at $450
retroactive back to January 2007. Huron County’s emergencymedical services provide 24-hourambulance and paramedic servicesfrom four bases and three postsstrategically located throughout thecounty: Bases exist in Exeter,Goderich, Tuckersmith and
Wingham, while space for
ambulance posts is rented in A-C-W,
Brussels and Bayfield.
The posts allow ambulance staff a
more spacious and comfortable
space to monitor emergency calls
outside of the vehicle.
Currently, EMS pays
approximately $500 per month for
their space in Bayfield, and are
negotiating rates in Brussels due to
air quality issues.
The county’s 12 vehicles cover an
area of 3,402 square kilometers,
providing emergency medical
response to a population base of
approximately 62,000 countyresidents.EMS vehicles are typically staffed with two paramedics and respond toboth emergency and non-emergencycalls.THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2007. PAGE 25. County’s EMS feels A-C-W rent too high
The next step has been taken in
putting Seaforth’s Family Health
Team all under a permanent roof
together. Tenders have come in for
the construction of the new building,
ranging from $1.96 million to $2.17
million.
Council is referring to the project
as the Community Care Access
Building and had further discussion
at a special council meeting called
for Nov. 27 specifically to discuss
this matter.
The tenders were opened on Nov.
13 by clerk-administrator Jack
McLachlan in the presence of
Marklevitz Architects. Eight
contractors received drawings and
specifications and four prices were
received by the municipality.
The highest tender is from Vanden
Heuvel Construction at $2,178,300,
the next down was from Feltz
Design Build at $2,107,280, the
third from Domm Construction at
$2,005,520 and the final and lowest
from Smith Construction at
$1,963,122.
All of the price quotations include
the GST. The work was originally
budgeted at $2,367,000, which
included an estimate on all of the
millwork.
Once the tenders were opened,
they were referred to the architect to
be reviewed.
Marklevitz Architects recom-
mended that council go with the
lowest tender, Wayne and Harold
Smith Construction Limited.
The letter stated that Smith
Construction had successfully
completed projects for their firm in
the past and that they were confident
in that company.
