The Citizen, 2007-11-22, Page 8SportsPAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2007. The Blyth Icedogs hosted a Midget boys broomball game against the Seaforth Stealers on Nov 17, thanks to some rescheduling from the coaches. Seaforth's Dave Bolton was first to get on the scoreboard when Blyth left a man uncovered at the net at the beginning of the first period. Chris Hundt shot the ball into the top corner of the net to take a 2-0 lead in the game for Seaforth. Seaforth was on a roll and Dan Steinman scored from the point to take a 3-0 lead. Ryan Finnie earned his second assist in the game. Seaforth dominated the first period with their strong shots on net and their speed as they were often first to the ball. The Icedogs’ goalie, Graham Bedard, took a beating with numerous shots on net, but he did a great job standing up and covering the net for his team. Blyth had a two-minute powerplay, but was unable to score. Blyth finally decided to play the game when Mike Hogan passed the ball around the net to Alex Hogan for a shot at the net. Brent Drost picked up the ball, chipping it into the top corner of the net for the Icedogs’ first goal. Blyth received a penalty and then doubled up the men in the penalty box after playing too many players on the ice. Blyth fought for their lives and successfully stopped their opponents from scoring while killing off the penalties. Seaforth had a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period. Blyth’s defence played a much stronger half in the second period as they didn't allow any goals to be scored. Blyth showed a little more aggression and speed as they dug for the ball. The locals had a nice two-on-one play when Mike Hogan earned another assist as he coaxed the Seaforth goalie out of the net, then passed the ball over the goalie to his team mate. Drost picked up the ball and flipped it into Seaforth’s net to narrow the gap in the score. Blyth received another penalty for high sticking, and successfully held off their opponents during the powerplay. With just a few minutes left on the clock, the teams decided to practise overtime. Both teams made some great plays but were unable to score. The game ended with a close score, but the Seaforth Stealers earned the 3-2 victory. The Brussels Ladies Rec Hockey team travelled to Mildmay this past weekend for a tournament. In game one they played Teeswater and won 5 – 1. Teeswater scored first with a shot on net that found our goaltender sleeping. The Brussels goalie stopped the rest of Teeswater shots making many great saves. Scoring for Brussels were Cheryl Baxter with two goals and one assist, Karin Marks with one goal and one assist, Kim Strome, playing in her first ever game, with one goal and Brooke Campbell with one goal, The other assists went to Kristen Fischer, Michelle Blake, Amy Siemon, Kim Mulvey and Jen Hopf. Game two was against Toronto. The team lost one 3 – 2. Debbie Campbell and Kristen Fischer scored one each with assists going to Mulvey, B. Campbell, Marks and Roxanne Nicholson. One win and one loss put Brussels in second place so the squad had to play Teeswater again to see who would go onto the final game. Teeswater gave their opponents a great game. The score was tied at the end of regulation time so they played a five-minute sudden death overtime. Danielle Good scored 1.26 into overtime to give Brussels the win and a chance at the finals. Good and Strome scored the other two goals assisted by B. Campbell and Fischer. The final game was another rematch with Toronto but Brussels went out ready to win and scored two goals to help their goalie enroute to a shutout. Scoring for Brussels was Mulvey with a nice shot from the point and Hopf. Baxter and D. Campbell earned assists. Brussels had a few new players out playing their first game and doing a great job. Melinda TenPas and Sara Houston helped out on defence along with a veteran S. Jamieson. Lori Malhiot and Jill Sholdice also helped out on the forward lines. Jane Badham was in net for all four games and did a superb job of stopping some great shots.
