The Larry Mercey and Friends
Christmas show is coming to Blyth
Memorial Hall on Friday evening,
Nov. 30.
Joining the Larry Mercey Trio will
be Country Clem, Aaron Shane and
the Juanita Wilkins Trio.
“The show is well named as we
are really good friends, who love to
play music, when and wherever we
can,” said Mercey.
Last year’s Christmas show,
performed in Hanover, was a sellout.
Mercy formed his trio back in
2004. He is well known in the area
having started his career on the
CKNX travelling Barn Dance in
1956. “I’ve been doing what I like
best, performing, for over half a
century.”
Playing acoustic lead and singing
bass is George Lonsbury from
Kitchener. The tenor and bassist is
Al Alderson from Shakespeare.
In 2005 the Trio recorded its first
CD, It Ain’t Over Yet. A song on that
CD, On My Father’s Side, has
become the group’s signature song.
Country Clem (Don Vair) is a
well-known local entertainer, “the
best comedian I’ve every worked
with,” said Mercey. “It doesn’t
matter how many shows we’ve done
together, when Clem’s out
performing I still stand backstage
and laugh.”
The character was born in a little
country church in Westfield. What
was intended to be a one-time
performance for a small social event,
blossomed into a livelihood.
Performances have followed in
driving sheds to the concert hall of
the Royal York.
Shane was born in Kitchener and
moved to Hanover in his teens. He
learned to play guitar from his
mother and gained experience by
impersonating Tim McGraw in a
tribute band.
At Country Music Week in Regina
this past September, the Canadian
Country Music Association selected
10 new artists from across the
country to showcase their talents.
Shane was among them.
“This was quite an honouor for a
performer in his sophomore years in
the music business,” said Mercey.
The Juanita Wilkins Trio is
comprised of Wilkins on guitar,
Laurie Dalton on bass and Brenda
Manderson on piano.
Wilkins is well-known in the area
and is currently the voice on the
Home Hardware TV commercials.
“What an asset Juanita, Brenda
and Laurie are to the show,” said
Mercey.
Tickets for the Christmas show are
available at the Box Office in Blyth

Quilts on display at Huron County Museum
This Friday, Nov. 16 at 8 p.m.,
The Livery’s Shining Hour
Productions aims to musically
transport its audience musically
somewhere down in the Mississippi
Delta employing acknowledged
harmonica and slide guitar virtuoso
Michael Pickett as their guide.
For over 30 years Pickett has led,
and performed with, roots/blues
bands clearly recognized for their
significant contribution to a
venerable musical art-form. Now,
stripped of any frills, Pickett’s
unique fusion of sensibilities, driven
by his thumping delta guitar
rhythms, muscular harmonica and
gravel and chains voice is winning
him acclaim as a true bluesman from
Arizona to Austria.
The last of the Shining Hour series
for fall, this licensed cabaret evening
will again feature innovative art
from the Goderich Co-op Gallery
and promises to be a memorable
highlight for blues and good-time
enthusiasts alike.

Quilts traditionally hold
memories, tell stories and still have
the ability to keep people warm.
As the weather cools down, visit
the Huron County Museum to view a
special exhibit of almost 70 quilts
now on display from the Museum
collection.
The exhibit includes quilts from as
long ago as the 1840s and as recent
as the 1990s. Wedding quilts, crazy
quilts, patchwork quilts, and log
cabin quilts are just some of the
patterns made through the years.
Sixteen signature quilts are also on
display made by various
organizations in Huron County.
Sewn to celebrate an anniversary or
person, or raise money for those in
need or the war efforts, each person
would pay for their name to be
stitched on the quilt.
Today these quilts serve to
help people remember past
family, friends and residents of the
County.
Quilts for the smallest visitors
include doll quilts and crib quilts
made and enjoyed by the youngest
residents.
All the quilts are from the Huron
County Museum’s own collection
and originate from across Huron
County. Auburn, Benmiller,
Brucefield, Brussels, Clinton,
Colborne Township, Dungannon,
