With an existing debt of $17,494.38 remaining on the park, Huron East donated the change to bring the total down to $10,000 to bepaid out of its parkland reserve. The recommendation, broughtforth by treasurer Brad Knight, highlighted the accomplishments ofthe Optimists in spearheading$130,000 in improvements to the park, not counting their donated labour and Huron East’s contribution sitting at $2,000 a mere 1.5 per cent of the gross costs. Council was quick to rectify this as they voted in favour of the motion. However, while the municipalityhad only donated $2,000 until Nov.6, they did assist the Optimist Clubby filing their Trillium grantapplication, which was approved, and all expenses were recorded through the municipality. This was announced at Brussels Homecoming after the outdoor church service in the park it was officially opened to the public. The remaining $10,000 is still due to the municipality from theOptimists. If the Optimists pay thefinal $10,000 themselves, theircontribution to the project will be atotal of $20,000.Huron East’s parkland reserve wasestablished in 2006 with $159,000 based on the percentage of weighted assessment of the former municipalities at the time of amalgamation. In Knight’s report, he lists several projects that are receiving funds from the parkland reserve, such asthe Walton Community Hall’s newwell, the Ethel playgroundequipment and the soccer fieldpurchase in St. Columban to name afew. Knight said in his report that the MVCA improvements are closer to the intent of the reserve than most of the projects the municipality have donated to from the fund already, making the donation well- justified. The new councillor for the Wingham ward of North Huron, Dr. Alma Conn, was sworn in at the Nov. 5 meeting. *** Council approved a donation for the Wingham Lions Club’s radio auction, Dec. 3. *** The rental fee was waived for Blyth Public School’s annual Christmas concert at Memorial Hall, Dec. 11 and 12. *** Josephine Street in Wingham will be closed Nov. 24 during the Santa Claus parade. *** Council supported a resolution from the Municipality of Brockton regarding the funding formula for conservation authorities. *** Clerk-administrator Kriss Snell is going to get more information regarding an invitation to participate in a 2008 Community Exhibits Program. Councillor Greg McClinchey wondered if this was an opportunity to showcase North Huron outside North Huron. Snell said that since the departure of museum curator Jodi Jerome no decision has been made on what direction they are taking with the museum. “I don’t think there are the staff resources to get an exhibit together.” *** A donation in the amount of $20,000 has been made to Wheels Away. Council has also requested that representatives attend a meeting to present the 2008 proposed budget and business plan, prior to the adoption of North Huron’s next budget. *** The Blyth Business Association is hosting a greet and meet at the Blyth Inn on Monday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. The purpose is to promote the BBA. *** From the Blyth arena advisory board meeting of Oct. 16, it was noted that the cost for additional hydro receptacles in the upstairs hall be submitted to the 2008 capital budget. The hydro at Shed #3 has been upgraded. The townshiip will not pursue a liquor licence at the Blyth arena. The person whose name is on the rental agreement is responsible under the alcohol policy. Following a discussion at the board meeting a recommendation was made that the Threshers, arena board and staff keep lines of communication open regarding any new buildings or additions being planned to see if there may be a way that both groups could benefit. Huron County council approved a recommendation from the cultural, services and seniors committee for a museum study in the amount of $50,000 at the Nov. 5 meeting. The reason, according to director of cultural services, Beth Ross, is to look at space issues in the museum. “We are at capacity and overflowing,” said Ross. “We need to take a broad look. Warden Deb Shewfelt confirmed Ross’s comments. “I toured the storage areas. There’s a lot of great stuff, but we will be at a standstill. This is something we need to deal with. We can’t say we’re not taking any more.” “We should be grateful to J.H. Neill for his vision and need to design some place so we can go forward.” Huron East forgives portion of Optimist debt Business Directory Offering a full range of services: auditing, accounting, business planning, income tax planning, personal financial planning, computer and management services.
