By Winnie Trachsel Huron-Perth PRO Guelph Area Women’s Institutes held their 68th Area Convention at the Palmerston and District Community Centre Complex, Thursday, Oct. 18. The theme for the day was One Hundred and Ten and Going Strong. Area president Pauline Weiland welcomed everyone. She encouraged the members to keep up the good work of Women’s Institute at the grassroots level. It doesn’t matter how big the branch she said, but try to go beyond the branch. Reports were presented by the Tweedsmuir curator, Marion Austin, Country Heritage Park, Glenna Smith, Erland Lee (Museum) Home, written report and the Adelaide Hoodless Home, written report. Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario president, Rosemary Moran reported on the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) Conference in Finland, the theme being Winning the Way for Women. There were 600 delegates in attendance from around the world. When the flag ceremony took place she likened her feelings to those the Olympians must feel when their Canadian flag is flown. Many resolutions were dealt with. Obesity was one that was suggested to be brought back for the societies to work on. Obesity can be related to heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Fast food consumption should be reconsidered. Volunteer pins and a certificate were presented by the FWIO president to the top membership recruiters Massie McKay and Kathy Bridge. Cindy Rabstien, retiring area voting delegate was also presented with a pin in recognition of her work for the past three years. Glenna Smith introduced guest speaker, Keith Robb an OPP media and communications officer from Wellington County. He presented film Drive Wise, involving a discussion between the police and a senior driver. The message was that the age of seniors increases their inability to react to the many challenges they face when they are behind the wheel. More drivers on the roads, changing technologies, physical and emotional conditions and fatigue are only a few challenges seniors face. Anne Innes, London Area brought greetings and challenged branch members to take time to visit each other. Fran Farrel, Grey Bruce Area brought greetings and extended an invitation to the Bruce International Plowing Match. Winnie Trachsel, Western Regional board director, encouraged members to use the valuable information in the Home and Country ROSE Garden and the Connecting Link newsletters to keep members informed. To create a festive atmosphere Waterloo, Wellington North, Wellington, Halton and Huron-Perth districts entertained by district presenting humorous skits. Musical singalongs were presented by Lynn Lodge and her church group, the Arkellights Praise Band. Following a delicious banquet members were entertained by guest speaker Audrey Orth, who belongs to Toastmasters. If everyone would live their lives according to the Mary Stewart Collect, they could become better WI members and gracefully accept changes in their busy lives. Skits, songs and dances were performed by the humorous group the Classy Conn-Cubines. The results of election of officers are: past president, Margaret McMahon; president, Pauline Weiland; first vice-president, Dianne Orr; secretary, Verna Coneybearer; assistant secretary, Bonna May; treasurer, Everdina Bender; Tweedsmuir curator, Robina Alexander; financial examiners, Ethel Corry, Margaret Cleland; area voting delegate, Margaret McMahon; alternate area voting delegate, Leone Foerter; heritage hall committee representative, Glenna Smith. C.C. Shoebox Dedication Evangelical Missionary Church For the kids The members of the Bluewater Shrine Club were very successful in their fundraising endeavours this year. In support of the 5 Huron County hospitals it was decided to donate $1,000 to each hospital (Goderich, Clinton, Wingham, Seaforth and Exeter). As Shriners in North America raise money for children’s hospitals, the Bluewater Club would like to see the donation benefit children’s health at these hospitals. A club member Doug Scrimgeour, second from left, and his wife Diane Radford, on his left, generously matched this amount making the total $2,000 to each hospital.
