Sixteen years! Do you know what
you were doing 16 years ago?
This past week, the 16th annual
meeting of the 5Rs Community
Thrift Shop was held at St. Ambrose.
Each year the meeting is a time to
gather and take time for celebration.
We’re still in business.
A small number of the founding
members still keep track to see that
the original purpose of the store is
maintained. Stories are often retold of thenegative reception when the ideawas proposed in 1990 and of courseall that did was make the challengeeven more fun. The store hassurvived, some years evenprospered. So pop in and check outthe merchandise. We, of course, still need yoursupport to stay afloat and thanks for
all you past encounters. So here’s to
the best place in Brussels to reduce,
reuse, recycle, reclaim and rejoice;
that’s where the 5Rs name came
from.
The environment was the new
wave in the 1990s and we just
improved on the original 3Rs to
show support for the future
endeavours. So keep up the good
work; we need the 5Rs in our
community. I thought it was trick or treat nightlast Friday. Groups of peoplewalking about the village flippingplastic bags as they chatted house tohouse. It was a fleeting thought asthe house tour signs came into view. The friendly atmosphere of thepleasant night continued as the folkswere welcomed into the homes. There was something for everyone
to enjoy — pretty decorations,
spotless towels, functional living
spaces as well as unique use of
space, tasteful touches, excellent
arrangements of the flower and
Christmas variety. Everyone starts
out with different expectations on
house tours and everyone gets their
own reward from the beautiful
homes that our friends live in every
day.
So thank you to the host families
for tidying up so well for us to view
your homes. To the skating club and
the area businesses thanks for your
effort to make for a very pleasant
activity.
Congratulations to Joshua Groppwho married Terri-Lynn Schell inStratford this past weekend. Inaddition to the Gropp clan, formerlocals in attendance were RobMcKercher, Jason Fear and MandySellers. There was a flock of pinkflamingos preparing to invade thelawn of Sheila Richards on Saturday. After landing the purpose of the
flight was evident. Sheila is so
pleased to be 80 and had such a good
time at the last two parties, the birds
let all her friends know it was party
time again.
So three parties times 80 years...
next year we’ll celebrate number
241.
Anyway, when you celebrate
August birthdays in November, who
cares as long as there are lots of
friends and lots of food. You’re our
hero Sheila. You have friends in
every age group. Live the moment
and never stop learning.
Bye now,
Betty G.W.
Nancy Goetz of Wroxeter brought
two Instant Crossword tickets
during the day, but it was not until
around 1 a.m. in the morning before
she had a chance to scratch them.
She couldn’t believe her eyes when
she scratched the first ticket only to
discover that she had all 11 words
needed to win a top prize of
$50,000.
“I just couldn’t believe it! I wasn’t
able to sleep once it finally sank in,”
Goetz told OLG Prize Centre staff in
Toronto when she claimed her prize.
Goetz, 48, is a machine operator
for Spinrite. She is married and has
two children. With the windfall, she
plans to pay bills and spend the
remainder for Christmas.
The winning Instant Crossword
ticket was purchased at Sam’s Store
on Centre Street in Wroxeter.
OLG is a provincial agency
responsible for province-wide
lottery games and gaming facilities.
Since 1975, OLG lotteries, Casinos,
Slots, and Resort Casinos have
generated more than $23 billion for
the benefit of the Province of
Ontario.
Gaming proceeds support
Ontario’s hospitals, amateur sport,
recreational and cultural activities,
communities, provincial priority
programs such as health care and
education, and local and provincial
charities and non-profit
organizations through the Ontario
Trillium Foundation.

A closer look
Maxine Armstrong of Fergus takes a close look at an

Brussels Skating Club’s home tour this past weekend. The
Ross home was one of five stops on the tour. Area
