When Dungannon resident Jennifer Black welcomed her second child in February of 2006, she and her family also welcomed a world of change and uncertainty with respect to parenting. Twenty-one month old Amiera was born with trisomy 21, the most common type of Down Syndrome that affects approximately one in 900 births in Canada. “We’ve been really, really lucky,” Black said, explaining that Amiera has shown promising development in recent months. “Her hearing, and sight are good, and she’s developing at a good pace.” Nov. 1 - 7 is National Down Syndrome Awareness Week in Canada, and to mark it, Black is currently offering 2008 calendars from her home. Herself an accomplished photographer and designer, Black was enlisted by the London Down Syndrome Association (LDSA) to produce the wall calendar, which features the photos of its members from throughout Elgin, Huron, Middlesex, Oxford and Perth counties. “Amiera is Miss January,” she boasted while holding up the first- page spread. The project was feverishly executed by Black in just two weeks, and is now available for purchase on-line through the LDSA, locally at St. George’s Anglican Church office located at 87 North St., Goderich or by contacting her directly. “The calendars are $10 each, and every cent goes to the LDSA,” she said. “The money helps to fund the ongoing support network for its members and parents, as well as the programs and projects it offers.” To purchase the 2008 LDSA calendar, visit St. George’s main office Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. or contact Black by phoning 519-529-7272. When Amiera was born, she was afflicted with tracheomalacia, a weakness and floppiness of the walls of the main airway. The condition resulted in breathing and feeding problems that required special tubes to treat. “As she got older, she got stronger and developed better muscle tone, so she’s gotten much better,” said Black. Amiera is now a happy and healthy baby girl, who spends a lot of her time with her number-one fan, three-year-old brother Gracin. Black said that Amiera gets colds pretty easily, but is so far overcoming most odds. Children born with any of the three types of chromosomal patterns that result in Down syndrome, trisomy 21, translocation and mosaicism, experience individual effects. While all share a sole characteristic, extra genetic material associated with the 21st chromosome, all experience unique development stages. It’s impossible to know what the future will hold for Amiera as she continues to grow, but Black and her family are already planning for Amiera to take part in many of the social and developmental programs offered through the London Down Syndrome Association. “As she gets older, this association will have programs available to help with a lot of her growth,” she said. “They offer up to 50 per cent funding for speech programs and organize social time for peers to interact.” TODD ARTHUR EDGAR Todd Edgar of RR3, Wingham, passed away in the Municipality of Morris-Turnberry as the result of a motor vehicle accident on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007. He was 29. Todd was the beloved husband of the former Annette Vincent. He was the loving father of Lane and Coye both at home. He was the son of Niel and Cathy Edgar of RR3, Wingham, and brother of Kim and Troy Ritchie and uncle to their children Kody and Lauren of Goderich. He was the grandson of Irlma Edgar of Wingham. Todd was the son-in-law of Bill and Lorna Vincent of RR1, Auburn and brother-in-law of Elvis Vincent of RR3, Auburn and his friend Julie Melick. He is also survived by Annette’s grandmothers Ruth Vincent of Goderich and Margaret McDougall of Clinton. Todd was predeceased by his grandparents Arthur Edgar, Howard and Helen Scane and by his infant brother Michael. Visitation was at the McBurney Funeral Home, Wingham on Tuesday from 1 - 4 p.m. and 6 - 9 p.m. The funeral service was held at the Wingham United Church on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Wayne B. Beamer officiated. Interment was in Wingham Cemetery, Wingham. In lieu of flowers memorial donations to the Lane and Coye Edgar Trust Fund would be appreciated by the family as expressions of sympathy.
