It’s hunting week and as daylight
approached Monday morning the
first shot rang out and startled me as
I got dressed for the day. It was just
past 6:30 a.m. and I think of all the
deer wondered what’s going on?
What happened to the quiet bush,
now surrounded by men in orange.
My own men were gone before 6
a.m. to meet up with the gang so
now it’s my house (and many others)
that are quiet and peaceful.
We hope everyone out there hunts
safely and drivers are watchful for
deer on the run. If the statistics of
deer collisions are any indication,
there’s plenty of deer out there. With
the corn harvest drawing to a close,
the fields are cleaned off and the
deer won’t be able to hide there at
least.
Our get-well wishes are sent out to
Doreen Hackwell who is a patient in
Stratford hospital.
There was a fantastic turnout at the
benefit dance for Ralph Woods. The
silent and live auctions and the
breakfast on Sunday morning had a
huge crowd on hand.
Countless friends from Walton,
Blyth, Winthrop and Seaforth and all
the area attended to support Ralph in
his recovery from an ATV accident
that has left him disabled. It was
great community and area support
for Ralph, his wife Dianne and
daughters Janelle and Katie.
Returning from a trip to England
is Brett Lee. Brett is the event
manager for the Canadian
Motocross Racing Co. and runs the
Canadian National Series, which
finishes up at Walton in August. He
travelled to England to be an
advisor to the Sheffield Supercross
Co. on strategies of marketing their
event, which ran Friday and
Saturday.
He was away five days and
attended meetings with them as well
as the event. There were some big
name Canadian motocross riders
participating in the event, such as
Jean Sebastian Roy, Cole Facciotti,
Ryan Lockhardt and Doug DeHann.
The Chesley Saddle Club held its
annual meeting and potluck dinner
at the Walton Hall on the weekend.
Judy Emmrich, Anne Halley and
other area folks are members of the
club. They report a great time with
nearly 40 in attendance.
Birthdays that were celebrated last
week include Halloween babies
Janine Knight and Davis Steffler.
November kicks off with celebrants
Judy Lee, Marvin Bachert, Peggy
Humphries, John Gaunt, Garret
Mader, Bruce Blake, Darryl Hoegy,
Chris Stevenson, Kathleen
Williamson, Jim Ryan, Clara
Glauser, Steven Huether, Justin
Morrison, Mark Bachert and Rita
Bowers.
Happy birthday everyone.
Congratulations to the McGavin
family on being honoured by the
Huron County Federation of
Agriculture Award for outstanding
contribution to agriculture.
It is no surprise to Walton-area
folks how generous the McGavin
family has been over the years to the
community, through their business
and personal contributions of time,
talent and support, the McGavin
family has been there. Just to
mention a few organizations in
Walton that have been supported by
the McGavin family in some way are
the Walton Ball Park, Walton Hall
and Duff’s United Church.
Folks of Walton can be proud of
the McGavins and congratulate them
on their recent honour.
I thought how lucky we had been
this summer that our unadventurous
dog had stayed away from meeting
any skunks. Our luck ran out though
last night.
Out for her last run of the nights,
he returned with the not-so-nice
odour of skunk. She didn’t take a
direct hit thank goodness, but she
was obviously close enough. As
Vienna is an indoor dog, she’s not
impressed with being left outside.

On Monday, Oct. 29, Grades 1-3 at Grey Central Public School took part in an Artitudes music
workshop, funded by the Foundation for Education. The workshop gave the students an
opportunity to hear and participate in music activities with guest presenter Willem Moolenbeek,
a professional saxophone player and professor at McMaster University. Students learned
about beat, rhythm, tempo and mood in music. (Photo submitted)
The service of Duff’s United
Church was led by lay worship
leader Gloria Wilbee. Worshippers
were greeted by Judy Lee and Jo-
Ann McDonald.
The minute for missions was read
by Ryan Baan. Gloria told the story
of Zacchaeus to the children.
Assisted by Teresa Baan, they taught
the children the song of Zacchaeus
and the actions.
The choir anthem was A Little
Talk with Jesus. Dianne McCallum
read the scriptures.
Gloria’s reflection was, A Place
With a View, an expanded story of
Zacchaeus and his meeting with
Jesus. She finished her reflection
with the song One Day at a Time.
The offering was collected by Neil
McGavin and Don Baan.
Next Sunday the piano, donated to
the church by the Murray family in
memory of Gordon Tobe and Laura
Murray, will be dedicated.
The food bank is always in need
and this month’s suggestions are
oatmeal, dry cereal, juices and
canned goods.
The Huron County Christmas
Bureau supplies Christmas gifts to
families in need and appreciates
your contributions. Donations will
be received during the white gift
service on Dec. 2.
Abby McGavin is again collecting
winter wear for the homeless.
Donations of coats, hats, mitts and
snow pants can be left at the church
or at McGavins by Dec. 1. She and
her family deliver the items to a
Toronto church, so when cleaning
out your closets, think of Abby and
her cause for helping others.
The United Church Women
Christmas party is Dec. 5 with
dinner and a fashion show. Contact
Judy Lee or Dianne McCallum for
your tickets by Nov. 16.
