The Citizen, 2007-11-08, Page 8Saturday, Oct. 27 the Blyth Tyke Reps played their first game of the season against Seaforth. The start of the game was a little slow for the Blyth boys but after getting the bugs out of the system they turned it on and played hockey. Ten skaters and one goalie faced off against a full squad of Seaforth kids who have been playing for four weeks more than the Blyth clan. At the final buzzer Seaforth outscored Blyth 3-2 in a close fast- paced game.Blyth’s goalscorers were Damon Allen assisted by Mitch McNichol and Bailey Bos assisted by Colin Howson. Jacob Gulutzen played a strong game in net stopping three breakaways and many other shots. Both Blyth’s lines skated hard and played well together offensively and defensively. Post game interviews had coach Toll saying “The boys played well as a team, a good bunch of kids”. Trainer Gulutzen, the female of the coaching crew said, “Good game, good listening but the grudge match is next Sunday at 3 p.m. in Seaforth.” SportsPAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2007. The Blyth Midget boys broomball team travelled to Mildmay for their first game of the season, on Oct. 30. The Blyth Icedogs is a large team with approximately 20 players, consisting of boys age 14 and 15 years of age. Captain Dan Dery got Blyth on the scoreboard in the beginning of the first period. The Mildmay goalie crouched down to save the ball and missed, Dery took the opportunity to poke the ball past the keep and scored for Blyth. This goal gave Blyth the momentum they needed and winger, Andy Bolinger, shot the ball into the corner. Jordon Rinn picked up the pass and shot the ball into Mildmay’s net. At half-time the Blyth Icedogs were ahead 2-0. Blyth seemed to dominate the number of shots on net in the second period and Mildmay’s goalie made some good saves. Although the Icedogs seemed a little sluggish at times, you could see their passes improving as the night wore on. Centre Brent Drost passed the ball into the Mildmay’s corner and rookie Kris Bjerg picked up the pass and shot the ball into the net to score for Blyth. The game ended with a 3-0 win for Blyth. Graham Bedard did a great job covering the net for Blyth and earned a shutout in this season opening game. The Blyth Icedogs are coached by Dan Nickel and Dave Vanneste. The Saugeen Maitland Lightning AA Midgets won gold this weekend in the Waterloo Ravens Fall Challenge Cup. With Brussels getting just 12 shots on net, only one made it past the Wallace goalie. Scoring for Brussels was Noah Terpstra, assisted by Logan Kellington. Wallace skated away with a 9-1 win. Saturday saw this team travel to Drayton for a morning game. This time Brussels hit the ice ready to win. Brussels made 21 shots on net, getting four in to score. Shots came from Kellington, Connor Bridge, Wyatt Machan, Noah Terpstra and Delayna Smith. Scoring were Machan with one and Kellington with three for his first hattrick of the season. The Kings are a Bantam level team for boys age 12 and 13, with players from Auburn, Blyth, Dungannon, Londesborough, Lucknow, Kinburn and surrounding areas. Murray Dale stood in net for the game and made some great saves to keep his team in the game. His keen reflexes and saves were put to the test throughout the game, and Dale earned a shutout. Towards the end of the first period, Blyth’s centre, Tyler Guetter, drove the ball towards Mildmay’s net and wingers Zach Drost and Mike Lalonde were there waiting to tap the ball for the only goal of the game. This was a very close game that gave parents and fans some entertaining and exciting broomball to watch. The second period saw both teams having several scoring opportunities, but unable to get any goals. Blyth received a penalty when rookie Mike Rawlings boarded his opponents while trying to get the ball. Blyth players dug in deep during Mildmay’s powerplay, and were successful in stopping their opponents from scoring.
