If you’ve ever felt moody, does
Goderich have a photography
display for you.
George Zoethout’s images are
currently on display at the Goderich
Co-op Gallery. The collection is
entitled Moody Images of Goderich.
Zoethout uses creative optical
illusions and other secret
techniques. The photographs, in
addition to using Goderich settings,
use Goderich people to add to the
atmosphere.
Zoethout first stepped into a
darkroom in 1984 and has never
looked back. He took the audio-
visual program at Fanshawe College
and now he is back at Fanshawe
taking multi-media design and
production.
Zoethout has been a member of
the Huron Society of Artists for
many years. This is where he has
gained valuable insight from his
peers on how to present his work
and himself to the public.
After 30 years at the helm, Jean
Young is retiring as executive
director of Town and Country
Support Services.
Town and Country is a leading
Home and Community Support
agency in Huron County providing
programs including Personal
Support/Homemaking, Respite,
Home Help and Home Maintenance,
Transportation, Meals on Wheels,
Seniors Dining, Seniors Exercise,
Lifeline - Emergency Response
System, Friendly Visiting and
Telephone Reassurance. The agency
also provides Personal Support/
Homemaking services in Perth
County.
The agency began in 1978 in
Wingham when it was determined
that an association would help to
bring together homemakers working
in Huron County. Young, the late
Betty Cardno of Seaforth and other
interested citizens met and together
founded Town and County.
In that first year the agency served
approximately 500 clients. By
comparison, in 2006, the
organization helped more than 4,000
people in Huron and Perth Counties
– helping seniors and frail elderly,
disabled adults, children and
families with essential daily care and
health programs.
Enabling people to live with
dignity and independence in their
own homes and communities is a
core philosophy of Town and
Country Support Services.
Young notes, “In my 30 years with
Town and Country we have
experienced some amazing and rapid
changes as more and more people
want to ‘Age at Home’. There is
increasingly more awareness and
recognition of the important role
home and community support
services play as partners in the
health care system. Research in
Canada and across the world shows
that these services particularly home
help/ homemaking and supportive
housing services play a crucial role
in maintaining the health, well-being
, independence and quality of life of
individuals.
Town and Country Support
Services Board of Directors is
pleased to announce that Mary
Atkinson has been named as the new
executive director.
Atkinson comes to Town and
Country Support Services with over
30 years experience in both
healthcare and business consulting.
Ms. Atkinson’s most recent position
was with a community health
services agency as a Business Unit
Leader and so has a solid
understanding of the community
health system. She is a registered
nurse with over 20 years experience
and has a B.Sc. in Biology and an
M.B.A. from the University of
Ottawa.
Atkinson notes, “I am very excited
to be a part of such a wonderful
organization as Town and Country
which has been built on solid
communal foundations – for the
community by responding to the
needs of the community. Jean
Young’s contribution to her
community is inspiring – she is an
icon.”
“I want to continue to build on
Town and Country’s grass roots
foundation to become THE model of
excellence for delivering an
integrated system of services that
address this community’s support
and health services needs for the
long term.”
Earlier this month Young was
honoured for her contribution on the
provincial scene by the Ontario
Community Support Association at
the organization’s annual conference
in Toronto.
Locally, Young will be recognized
at a special event held in her honour
on Saturday, Nov. 10 at the Betty
Cardno Centre in Clinton. Everyone
is welcome to attend a come-and-
go tea from 2-4 p.m. followed
by a dinner and dance starting
at 6 p.m. Contact Town and
Country in Wingham at 519-
357-3222 or in Clinton at 519-482-
9264.
