HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-11-01, Page 8The Ontario Provincial Police Huron County Detachment is warning motorists that it’s time to remember to watch out for wildlife on area roadways. Of the 31 property damage collisions reported to the Huron OPP during the week of Oct. 22, 20 were due to collisions with deer. October, November and December are peak times when deer and other types of wild animals venture out onto highways, as this is their mating and migration time period. Peak times for collisions are 5 a.m. - 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. - 11 p.m. OPP recommend motorists slow dow especially during these times. The OPP suggest Watch-Steer-Brake and Stop to prevent getting injured or killed during an encounter with any wildlife on the roadways: • Watch the road ahead by scanning from shoulder to shoulder • Watch for yellow wildlife warning signs – slow down in these areas • Use high beams and watch for the glowing eyes of animals • Steer in control – Never swerve to avoid hitting an animal • Brake firmly but don’t lock on your wheels – slowly will provide you with control • Stop – safely … remember other animals may follow SportsPAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2007. The Saugeen Maitland PeeWee A girls hockey team played at home and away this past weekend. Saturday the girls played Waterloo and won 4-1. Goals were scored by Kelly Gribbons with two, Sydney Smith, and Nichole Marriage. Assists went to Hannah Davidson with two and Becky Waring. Sunday the girls travelled to London to play the Devilettes and won the game 1-0. The single goal was scored by Gribbons with assists to Hannah Davidson and Caroline McDowell. The Blyth Novices got their first victory of the season winning 5-4 over Drayton, which the week before, shutout the Bulldog team 5- 0. It was a solid team effort by all 13 players. Scoring for Blyth were Chad Treble and Brenden Howson with two goals each and Cody Treble netting one. Assists went to Owen Andrews, Morgan Howson and Craig Raynard. The Bulldog’s next games are in Goderich on Friday, Nov. 2 at 7:45 p.m. and back in Blyth Sunday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. against Minto. Blyth Novices net first win of season The Brussels Tyke squad started the season with a game against Seaforth recently. It was a great opener with back and forth action for the whole game. Unfortunately for the locals, Seaforth came out on top with a 4-2 win. Brussels goals were by Noah Terpstra, assisted by Brett Stevenson, and Cameron Wheeler, with Avery McArter assisting. The second game was on home ice to Elma Logan. Brussels gave Elma Logan’s goalie a workout, and scored two. Terpstra and Nick McArter got the goals. Elma-Logan failed to get any by Jarron Thompson, who played a great game in net. The Brussels Tyke team consists of Jasmin Vader, Sarah Strome, Dana Dolmage, Darren Evans. Teddy Jacklin, Darion Fritz, Nick McArter, Hudson Smith, Ronan Jared, Avery McArter, Noah Terpstra, Jarron Thompson, Nolan Johnston, Cameron Wheeler and Brett Stevenson. Coaches are Brian McArter, Doug McArter, Gary Terpstra and Ron Stevenson. On his tail The puck gets away from the Mitchell Bantams while his Brussels opponent fights to get around him and pick it up. Unfortunately, they didn’t stay that way, losing this match 7-3. (Vicky Bremner photo) Brussels Tykes open season In Lower Lakes Female Hockey League action this weekend, the Saugeen Maitland Lightning AA Midgets won both their home and away games. The Lightning travelled to Strathroy on Saturday where they defeated Bluewater by a score of 4- 0. Brianne Wheeler, Brussels earned the shutout, with Lightning goals from Ona Mezenberg (Owen Sound), Eastlyn Bellamy (Sauble Beach), Dru Austin (Goderich) and Tammy Freiburger (Wingham). The girls returned home on Sunday to face Windsor and came out on top 3-1 with Stephanie McDougall (Mitchell), earning the win in net. Bellamy chipped in again with two goals and Mezenberg added another for the Lightning. The girls will be in action this upcoming weekend at the Waterloo Ravens Tournament in Kitchener- Waterloo.
