Huron County Detachment is
warning motorists that it’s time to
remember to watch out for wildlife
on area roadways. Of the 31
property damage collisions reported
to the Huron OPP during the week of
Oct. 22, 20 were due to collisions
with deer.
October, November and December
are peak times when deer and other
types of wild animals venture out
onto highways, as this is their
mating and migration time period.
Peak times for collisions are 5 a.m. -
7 a.m. and 5 p.m. - 11 p.m. OPP
recommend motorists slow dow
especially during these times. The
OPP suggest Watch-Steer-Brake and
Stop to prevent getting injured or
killed during an encounter with any
wildlife on the roadways:
• Watch the road ahead by scanning
from shoulder to shoulder
• Watch for yellow wildlife
warning signs – slow down in these
areas
• Use high beams and watch for the
glowing eyes of animals
• Steer in control – Never swerve
to avoid hitting an animal
• Brake firmly but don’t lock on
your wheels – slowly will provide
you with control
• Stop – safely … remember other
animals may follow
