All is well in Brussels I’m told.
We’ve been out of the country for the
last week and all was well there as
well.
Ralph and I, Mike, Val, Chris and
Phil headed to Cuba last Sunday to
be part of a week-long celebration
for our Curtis and his bride Julie
Roberts. No one in their right mind
could not have a good time where we
were last week. We had the most
beautiful weather, sometimes over
30 but the trees and the palm shelters
all along the beach made for very
good visiting, snoozing and reading.
With over 50 guests along from
various parts of Canada, the majority
of them in the early years of theirlife, it was never hard to findsomeone ready to do anything thatyou wished – scooters, bikes, snorkelling, eating, dancing, beingentertained, walking and the listgoes on. Oh my.Wedding day was Wednesday andall went as planned, including theweather. A horse and carriage
complete with a black stetson on the
driver brought first Curt and Cortez
his best man, then went to get Julie
and her friends to meet on the beach
for the ceremony. The ladies were all
very beautiful in pink while the guys
in their white shirts and beige pants
looked pretty sharp as well. The
reception, dinner and dance were
also set up on the beach and even the
moon turned full just to make this
very fun wedding even better.
Our resort, near Holguin on the
north side of the Island of Cuba, has
beautiful countryside all about.
Mountains, hills and valleys
numerous trees including many of
the flowering variety. Sugar cane,
bananas, avocado and coconut make
for a very nice drive about this area.We did a country tour from ourresort one day with a very passionateCuban. He made their history sointeresting and was able to answerany questions tossed his way withgreat pride. We were on a bus andwere taken to several municipalities. We were allowed to wander and askquestions as we visited their medical
clinic, their one-room school and a
private farm with the biggest fiscus
tree you could imagine – there were
at least eight people enjoying the
shade as we snacked on homemade
banana chips, guava jelly and cheeseas well as the very strong coffee.Pretty fine way to spend a day.I have a new appreciation for theunderwater. I could get prettyexcited about all the pretty wee livesthat are visible through a snorkelingmask. Now if I could get one that isa bifocal. Now it’s back to reality. We have
very excellent memories, with
pictures of course, our four sons in
one place at one time. We are
blessed.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

project.
“I want a library in Brussels, but I
think we have to think about the
whole municipality,” Stretton said.
“I think it’s pretty easy for people to
ask for something if they don’t have
to pay for it.”
Stretton compared the library to
the BMG recreation centre, saying
that the final cost of the library will
total three years of operating costs at
the municipality’s recreation
centres.
Councillor Bill Siemon said that
the two couldn’t be compared.
“We’re talking about a recreation
centre, compared to a library that’s
open 20 hours a week and staffed by
the county,” he said.
Stretton countered by saying that
people pay a lot of money out to
associations to use the recreation
centre.
MacLellan backed the project,
saying “Everybody will get use out
of the library. At some point we just
need to step up to the plate.”
MacLellan talked about the
hospital project in Wingham and
how that community found out the
hard way that fundraising isn’t as
effective once the building has gone
up.
“I’m hoping we can get our ducks
in a row and find the funding before
the build,” he said.
“If it has to come from tax dollars,
I’m sorry, it has to. I’m not willing
to lose the facilities that we already
have in Huron East.”
Steffler agreed with MacLellan, as
did several other councillors.
MacLellan said that most of the
funding the municipality would be
looking for would be up front.
However, from local service groups,
he would accept pledges over five
years, noting that many of the local
service clubs have always
been helpful with these types of
projects.
No action was taken by council,
but a public meeting on the fate of
the library, with the question
remaining whether to build an
addition or a new library, should be
expected soon.
