Local F.E. Madill Secondary
School students were acknowledged
for their achievements last Friday at
their commencement ceremony.
Kerissa VanAmersfoort of Blyth
was honoured with the Michelle
Andrew Memorial Scholarship,
awarded to the top track and field
athletes going on to post-secondary
education. VanAmersfoort was also
awarded the Crime Stoppers award,
given to a student who demonstrates
good school citizenship.
VanAmersfoort was also one of
three local recipients of the Queen
Elizabeth II Aiming for the Top
scholarship, awarded by the
government of Ontario to students
remaining in Ontario to pursue post-
secondary education.
Brussels area’s Keshia Bishop also
received numerous honours,
including the Queen Elizabeth II
Aiming for the Top scholarship as
well as the The Big M award, going
to students who have earned three
intermediate awards for academics,
athletics and activities.
Bishop also took home the Huron
County Women’s Institute Education
award, given to a student who is a
full-time resident of the county who
is furthering their education in
agriculture or life skills.
Bishop also won the Huron
County award.
Lauren Spink was also a multiple
award-winner. She won the Menzies
Endowment Fund award along with
Jill Johnston. The Menzies award is
given to graduates of Brussels Public
School and who have the highest
averages in 11 senior courses that
meet diploma and post-secondary
admission requirements.
Johnston was the third local
recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II
Aiming for the Top scholarship. She
also won the Huron Women
Teachers Association scholarship,
which goes to a female student who
is pursuing education in their post-
secondary studies and has strong
leadership skills and academic
standing.
Spink, in addition to the Menzies
award, took home two subject
proficiency awards, one in exercise
science and the other in biology.
Lindsay Watson of the Brussels
area won the J.W. Gerth Character in
Action award. The award is given to
a Grade 11 student who contributes
positively to the school and their
community. Watson also won the
general proficiency award for Grade
11.
Aaron Richmond, formerly of
Brussels, triumphed in two
categories, winning the Mustangs on
the Move award, awarded to students
who contributed positively to life at
the school and who are now moving
on to post-secondary education or
the workplace.
Richmond also won the
Lieutenant Governor’s Community
Volunteer award, an award
recognizing a student who has
exhibited exemplary volunteer
involvement within the school and
the community.
Alyssa Gowing of Brussels was
another recipient of a Big M award
as well as a Mustang on the Move
award.
Josh VanCamp of the Belgrave
area was awarded the computer and
information science subject
proficiency award, while Chris
Corbett of Brussels won the
technological design subjectproficiency award and Brent Martinof RR1 Lucknow won thetransportation technology subjectproficiency award.
Martin also won the Wescast
Industries Inc. award, given to
students who are furthering their
education in foundry-related
technology or business.
Matthew White was awarded the
Brussels Community Development
Trust scholarship, going to a
graduate of Brussels Public School
who exhibited good citizenship
while at F.E. Madill and who plans
to further education in a technical
field.
Leanne Elston took home the
Garniss Family award, presented to a
student from the Belgrave area who
exhibited strong school citizenship
while contributing to their
community through involvement.
Elston was also a recipient of the
Mustangs on the Move award and
the Big M award.
Emi Siertsema of RR2 Blyth won
the Huron Perth Real Estate Board
award, given to a 4U graduate who
plans to study the business field in
post-secondary education.
Darby Alcorn of Brussels was
awarded the Huron United Way
award, given to a Grade 11 student
who demonstrates diverse
community involvement, positive
leadership and participation in
community events.
The Morris Ward Graduate award,
given to a student from the Morris
Ward who has positively contributed
to the school as well as the
community, went to Janisa Cloakey.
The Oldfield Memorial Arts
scholarship went to Devon Josling.
This scholarship is awarded to a
student with a high academic
standing from Brussels who is
furthering their education in art,
English or music.
The winner of the West
Wawanosh Mutual Insurance Award
was Elliott Miller of RRi Lucknow.
The award recognizes a graduating
student who has chosen to further
their education in agriculture or a
related field.
Other local recipients of Mustangs
on the Move awards were Orie
Falconer of Blyth and Nathan Prior
of Brussels.
Falconer was also awarded one of
the Big M awards.
Other local Big M award winners
were Sophie Jefferson of Auburn
and Adam Young of Blyth.
Local winners
Devon Josling was the recipient of the Oldfield Memorial
Arts scholarship at F.E. Madill’s commencement night. The
award is for a student from Brussels, who is furthering their
education in art, English or music. Josling is in multi-media
design and production at Fanshawe College. Lauren Spink
was one of two recipients of the George Menzies
Endowment Fund. Spink is studying nursing at McMaster
University. The second recipient was Jill Johnston, who is at
the University of Guelph, studying child, youth and family
