After four years of work on
woman abuse prevention,
representatives from Huron County
presented at an international
conference in London last week.
Over 150 delegates attended the
Nursing Network on Violence
Against Women conference. Amy
Leduc, a public health nurse at the
Huron County Health Unit, was one
of the presenters. She’s been part of
the provincial program from the
beginning.
“The project involved training
health care professionals on
screening all women over the age of
12 for abuse they may be
experiencing. The work is important
because of the prevalence of woman
abuse. There are many health effects
for women. The work we’ve done is
exciting. We accomplished a lot over
a short period of time with limited
funding.”
Leduc says having the Wingham
and District Hospital on board has
been critical. Many physicians and
health care providers from across
Huron County also attended training
on woman abuse prevention.
The project partners included:
Huron County Health Unit; Rural
Response for Healthy Children;
Huron County Women’s Shelter;
Children’s Aid Society; the Huron-
Perth Centre for Children and Youth;
and the Wingham and District
Hospital.
Leduc says she was pleased with
the response at the conference.
“Delegates who attended our session
congratulated us on the work that’s
been done in our county. They
were particularly impressed with
the commitment of everyone
involved.”
The provincial funding for the
project has ended. The group hopes
to be a resource in the County as
needed.
