Blind mixed darts start at 8 p.m. and everyone is welcome. Random partners are picked and the cost to play is $1. Fun is the object of this night so all interested persons are welcome. Darts are available for use for new players. Enjoy a night out and meet new friends. The Friday night supper of chicken wings was enjoyed by just a small crowd. This week is ham and scalloped potatoes. Saturday was the day that District C sent its bus load of comrades and entertainers to Parkwood Hospital in London. Pickups from Lucknow to Goderich, Clinton to Exeter and off to London saw nearly 50 people off for the day. They arrived at Parkwood just in time to grab a light lunch then it was off to the rooms to bring veterans and patients alike to the new veterans’ lounge area to enjoy the show. Singing, skits, magic show and performances spanned well over an hour of entertainment. Attending for Brussels Branch 218 were Comrades Mabel Glanville and Isabel Alcock. They took along with them a donation of kneelaps provided by Leona McDonald and filled gift bags of needed items provided by Branch 218 that were bought and assembled by Comrade Marg Bennett. This is the 19th year that District C has held this entertaining day. Sunday, Oct. 21 was the celebration of Zone C1 veterans dinner held at Kincardine Branch 183. There were 10 veterans and spouses attending from Branch 218. The afternoon saw some interesting entertainment provided by Kincardine folks, then a delicious dinner was served. Attending from Brussels Branch 218 were Ross and Marg Bennett, Max Oldfield and Aud- rey Chambers, Bill Steadwell, Cecil Moore, Glen and Jean Bridge, Forrest Whittard and Olave Little. They enjoyed the day and the lovely drive. Cadets are still collecting pop cans and returnable bottles. Drop them off behind the Legion on Tuesday evenings for pick up. Euchre saw only eight tables at play. First place went to Helen Dobson and Mabel Willis with 78 points. Coming in second place were Dorothy Dalton and Delores Howatt with 76 points and third prize went to Elsie Mogk and Doreen Skinner with 68 points. Low prize with 41 points went to Edith Pushelberg and Georgina Eckmeier. Lone hand prizes went to Bush Whittard and Doreen Smith. The Sunday night dance crowd enjoyed the music of Red Rascal Band. Close to 90 people were in attendance. Back by popular demand, it’s the Hullett Owl Prowl! This time it promises to be even cooler than the last one! (That does not just mean weather wise!) On the evening of Oct. 27, we will be venturing out into the night at the Hullett Provincial Wildlife Area under a full harvest moon for an evening of owl viewing. Get into the Halloween spirit and view some of Hullett’s nocturnal hunters while you’re at it. We will be meeting at the Sugar Bush parking lot, 80602 Wildlife Line at 6 p.m. on the night of Saturday, Oct. 27. From there, prepare for a trek into the forest, spotting and listening for owls. This event is not to be missed and is suitable for all ages and (quiet, well trained) dogs are welcome! The eastern screech owl and great- horned owl are the typical species we see at Hullett, but there’s always a chance we could observe a more rare owl. Other owls that are found in this region include the long-eared owl, short-eared owl, northern saw- whet owl and the barred owl. Individual long-eared, short-eared and northern saw-whet owls have been known to breed at Hullett in past years, albeit in small numbers. The barred owl, on the other hand, generally prefers larger tracts of forest, but can be seen in this region in migration. You can visit our owl pages on the website to see and hear the species we’ve discussed above at www.hullettmarsh.org/TheOwlPages.html. On the night of the Owl Prowl, we will be playing pre-recorded calls from a CD to attract the owls and then will listen for their reply. The presence of a full moon has been proven to heighten owl activity, so we should be able to observe a few birds on this night. On our initial Owl Prowl, this spring, we got good, close-up looks at five screech owls and one, more distant view of a great-horned owl. We hope to be as lucky on this evening. It may also be possible to see other species in migration around this time too – keep your fingers crossed! Be sure to dress for the weather, as the evenings have been getting progressively chillier. Bring a flashlight and some comfortable shoes/hiking boots. This time you need not worry about the bug spray! If you have any questions, please call the Hullett Office at 519-482-7011 or email, outreach@hullettmarsh.org.
