HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-10-25, Page 26By Rev. Sandra Yule,Duff’s, Walton and BluevaleUnited ChurchesAs an ordained minister in the
United Church of Canada, I have
“been set apart to the office and
work of a Minister of Word,
Sacrament, and Pastoral Care”.
This at first sounds very pompous,
but in reality (for me anyway) it all
collapses into the word servant. I
have been called as a servant or
disciple of Christ to share my
understanding of the Christian faith,
to join in the celebration of ritual
with others and to offer myself to
others through pastoral care. If you ask me which of the three ismy favourite I couldn’t pick one overthe other. However, if you ask me
what I spend most of my time doing,
it would be pastoral care.
If you ask me what the core lesson
I have learned through pastoral care
is I would have to say that healing is
the central goal of life. I am not
speaking of physical healing but
holistic healing. It is the desire inour inner being to have a life that isone of integrity, wholeness and innerpeace.
The psyche, it would seem, has an
intrinsic tendency toward healing or
in other words a desire-to-
wholeness. Is it possible to
experience this holistic way of
being? I believe there are a few
things we can practise that will help
us along the way. They are:1. Attend To Your Whole PersonNeeds: According to the time-
honoured metaphoric classification,
we are ‘body, mind, and spirit. We
must care for our needs in each of
these areas every day.
2. Be Truly Present To This
Moment: Life happens right now in
the present moment. Most of us are
so preoccupied with the past or the
future we miss the joys of today.
Don’t miss the opportunities of
giving others your undivided
attention. It is the best gift you can
give to anyone.
3. Open Yourself Up To The Divine:
Whatever religious tradition you
follow, share it with others but be
open and respectful in letting others
share their faith with you.
Try to always remember that our
spiritual life is relational in its
expression. When you open yourself
up to the Divine - the Divine opens
up to you.
4. Listen To Your Intuition: The
American mythology professor
Joseph Campbell stated it well when
he said, “follow your bliss”. Theemphasis here is on “your bliss’.You can only truly be happy if youare true to yourself.
5. Create. We are co-creators with
God so make time for your creative
side each day.
6. Love Yourself: You are a
uniquely created soul, with a
particular potential to contribute to
this world. What is it that you can
do, must do, if you are to fully
express your potential?
7. Gratitude: Keep a gratitude
journal. This world is an amazing
place and we have so much to be
grateful for. Everyday there are
things that happen to us, and for us,
that make us grateful. Take time to
think about for whom or what you
are grateful.
Make sure you also take time to
write your blessings down in your
gratitude journal.
8. Love God with all your heart and
love your neighbour as yourself.
Follow this Golden Rule which is
found in every major faith tradition
in the world and you will never go
wrong.
