HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-10-25, Page 7A new program has been added to
Brussels Library.
The Centre for Employment and
Learning/Avon Maitland District
School Board is offering English as
a Second Language for families
from 1-2 p.m. on Thursdays,
followed by an adult program.
A local volunteer provides
childcare on site during the adult
class.
Anne Dodington, Branch manager
for Seaforth, Brussels, Hensall
Libraries said part of her job is to
find programs for each of the
branches. “We do a rotation, a week
in other branches, and I noticed there
wasn’t any program specific to
Brussels.”
What she had noticed each time
she was in the Brussels library was a
small number of Spanish-speaking
people coming in to use the
computers. “I kept it in the back of
my mind. Then when I was looking
at a regular program for Brussels I
thought of ESL.”
Dodington spoke to her supervisor
who noted that the Avon Maitland
District School Board offers ESL
and suggested that Dodington
contact them.
“I contacted them and they were
very keen on the idea,” said
Dodington, who met with instructor
Sarah Cieslar.
Cieslar said Brussels librarian Sue
Nichol really helped to get the word
out in the community about the
classes.
“She went out to the church
groups and distributed flyers. She
has been a great help.”
As well as the English as a Second
Language program, the Centre is
also offering Literacy Basic Skillsfrom 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. “Adultscan do GED preparation or get anyassistance with reading, writing ormath they might need,” said Cieslar,“anything to help them gainemployable skills or upgrade for a
job.”
Noting that Brussels is a half hour
drive from most of the Centres for
Employment and Learning,
Cieslar said she is also available to
pick up and drop off lessons
for people taking adult educa-
tion subjects or to obtain and
deliver information. “I like to see people treated fairlyin the county and sometimes theyrequire services that are not alwaysavailable to them because oftransportation issues.”Cieslar notes that the literacy
program is completely confidential
as well.
