Fall weather greeted the many Friends of Balls Bridge to the official opening of Balls Bridge on Saturday, Oct. 13. Old friends reminisced about the good old days they spent as kids, swimming, jumping off the bridge or remembering how the bridge rattled when Dad’s old car was driven over it. Many ‘love’ stories were recalled. Daryl Ball was master of ceremonies for the afternoon. He gave a brief history of the bridge and recalled the Ball connection. He called upon dignitaries MPP Carol Mitchell, Huron County warden Deb Shewfelt, reeve of Central Huron Bert Dykstra and councillor for Ashfield-Colborne- Wawanosh Barry Millian to each say a few words. It was the strength of the community and dedication of the Friends of Balls Bridge that accomplished the unachievable task of saving a very unique and rare rod and pin construction bridge. Even more remarkable, it’s a multi-strand bridge. The beautiful scenery was left untouched. This bridge is an important part of local heritage. Congratulations were extended to all responsible for this awesome achievement. Once again it proves what determination and dedication of a few can achieve. After the ribbon cutting, bagpipers Jim Craig and John Jewitt led everyone across the bridge. A reception followed. Knox United Church was rocking on Sunday as the musical talents of Jack Storey and friends sang many hymns that Elvis Presley sang. The full house was entertained by the Elvis Gospel Group. Rev. Steve Hildebrand from Egmondville United Church led the 103rd anniversary service. He recalled the dark day in August 1977 when Elvis Presley lost his life, but said his spirit is alive in song. This certainly was evident on Sunday. When was the last time you heard someone say after church, “I could have sat for another hour and listened”? That was the sentiment of many of the parishioners on Sunday. Offering was received by the Archambault and Sturzenegger families. The Elvis Gospel Group had the congregation joining in the hymns. A reception followed after the service. Celebration time It was a special day on Saturday as Ball’s Bridge was re-opened to light traffic. Phase one has been completed and the tourist spot is ready for folks to come out and enjoy the fall colours. Dignitaries on hand for the ribbon cutting were, from left: Huron County warden Deb Shewfelt, Huron-Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell, Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh councillor Barry Millian and Central Huron reeve Bert Dykstra. Rob Morley authorized by the CFO for The Rob Morley Campaign NEWS FROM AUBURN Gospel groupperforms People celebrate historic bridge re-opening Huron Chapel was abuzz on Oct. 13 as the ABC Women’s Ministries hosted Busy as a Bee? Fall Renewal. The fellowship room was decorated with bees as 80 women arrived to learn about the topic for the day of busyness. The day began with refreshments, then a time of singing, led by a combined praise team from Auburn’s Huron Chapel and Living Water Christian Fellowship in Blyth. Nancy May from Radiant Life Christian Books from Goderich brought a good portion of her store to Auburn. She highlighted spiritual books to help people focus on God as well as time-saving organizing books and cookbooks. The feature speaker for the day was Marion Ford from Newmarket. She is a speaker, writer and Christian dramatist. Marion pointed out there are several reasons causing busyness. They might be greed, work, alcoholism, procrastination, unrealistic expectations, over- scheduling, poor planning or simply we’re afraid to say “no”! As a result of this, we are teaching our children to be busy causing them to become anxious or depressed. The best antidote for children is times of unscheduled play and giving them time to be creative. Marion also stressed the need to take a day of rest. The Sabbath is God’s gift. After lunch, participants were treated to a fashion show with outfits from Marita’s Fashion Boutique in Clinton. It was great fun as the models paraded through displaying their stylish wear. Finally, everyone gathered in the sanctuary where Marion, through drama, depicted the life of Mary Slessor, a missionary from Scotland to Africa. It was an amazing experience as that transported everyone, to that far away continent. It gave a glimpse of the hardships and joys that Mary encountered as she worked to save the many children that were left to die because of the superstitions of the time. She had the ability as a peacemaker, bringing warring tribes together. Wherever she went she told of the love of Jesus. Mary’s motto was “I don’t mind where I’m going as long as it’s forward”!
