The Blyth PeeWee broomball
team played in the Blyth Junior
mixed broomball tournament this
past weekend.
The team was made up of any
Blyth PeeWees who wanted to
participate.
Their first game was against
Mildmay I. Blyth had only been on
the ice once this season and it was
the first time they had played
together as a team. They stood up
well against their opponents, but
Mildmay scored in the second half
and held on for the win.
The second game put Blyth up
against Seaforth. It was another
close game with Blyth starting to
work like a team.
Matt Terpstra scored with a long
shot from the point to give Blyth a
one-goal lead. Blyth fought off some
stiff offence to take the win.
Their final game was against
Mildmay II for the A championship.
Blyth started off strong. Curtis
Terpstra, who played net for the
tournament, held Mildmay off the
scoreboard.
The game went through one
overtime period with no winner.
Well into the second overtime period
Gerrit Logtenberg finally got a good
shot on net to give Blyth the victory
and the A championship.
With just one week of practise
behind them, Blyth hosted its first
co-ed broomball tournament on Oct.
12 and 13. The Blyth and Brussels
arena were the place to be this past
weekend to see some exciting games
of broomball.
A committee of parents got
together to plan and put on this
tournament to raise funds for Blyth
junior broomball. Each family was
asked to help make this tournament a
success by donating their time,
asking for silent auction items from
our supportive community or simply
making a financial contribution.
At broomball registration, people
were told about this tournament and
whoever wanted to put a team in
could do so. This co-ed tourney was
set up for kids in PeeWee, Bantam,
Midget and Juvenile level. Many
teams from central west region came
to play including Innisfil (near
Barrie), Mildmay, Palmerston and
Blyth. Each team was guaranteed to
play three games.
Since this tournament was at the
beginning of the season, players
were all a little rusty, before
eventually finding their broomball
legs. Everyone was improving as the
day wore on.
Fans and coaches were treated to
some very exciting games of
broomball. Many of the games were
so closely matched that they went
into double overtime to find a game-
winning goal.
The winning teams were awarded
black toques with A champs written
on them. The Blyth PeeWees won
the final A champ game against
Mildmay I. The B championship
game saw Palmerston beat out
Mildmay II.
Two Mildmay Bantams teams
battled out for the final A game;
while Palmerston edged out Innisfil
in overtime to become Bantam B
champs.
Blyth’s two Midget teams walked
away as the A and B champs against
Palmerston and Mildmay.
In the juvenile level Blyth won the
A championship against Palmerston
and two Listowel teams went head-
to-head in the B championship
game.
The committee was very pleased
to see the support of the broomball
families who worked together to
make this a successful tournament.
The final totals were not in at press
time but approximately $2,000 was
raised for junior broomball.
Organizers hope to run this
tournament again next year, making
it an annual event.
A Grey day
Not only was the sky looking grey, but the scoreboard was
all lit up on the Grey side, with the girls from Grey Central
Public School scoring four goals before halftime against
their opponents from Brussels Public School at the annual
soccer tournament, played this year at Grey P.S. Brussels
came back with a quick goal early in the second half, but
Grey looked to have the game under control as the game
wore on. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

Tourney begins broomball season
This past Sunday, the Brussels
Novices took to the ice in an
exhibition game against Listowel.
This was the first game of the season.
Listowel was quick to light up the
scoreboard in the first period, racking
up five goals.
Brussels scored late in the second
when Logan Kellington put an
unassisted goal in the net.
Listowel added three more in the
second period, and four in the third to
take a 12-1 win.

made by Bennett Newell, Kellington
and Dylan McNeil. Noteable
