HAROLD ALEXANDER
CAMPBELL
Harold Alexander Campbell passed
away peacefully in his sleep while a
patient in Clinton Public Hospital on
Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007. He was in his
88th year.
Harold was born in Tate Twp. in the
Rainy River District, the youngest
son of George Alexander Campbell
and his wife, Jane Barclay (Hutton)
Campbell. His mother passed away
when Harold was an infant and he
was raised by his maternal
grandparents, Rev. John and Mary
(Haugh) Hutton. When his
grandfather retired, they moved to
Bluevale.
Following his grandfather’s death
Harold went to live with his uncle,
Rev. John Hutton Jr., who lived in
northern Ontario. Harold eventually
went to Toronto to live with his sister
and her husband. He remained there
until he was 13, then moved to be
with the youngest of his sisters in
Wingham.
He started out on his own at an
early age. Harold worked ondifferent farms and eventually cameto work on the farm owned byWilliam Cardiff near Brussels,Ontario.
He married Adeline Cardiff and a
few years later he and his brother
John went into the trucking business
purchasing two used trucks. They
moved to Blyth in 1948 and as time
went on bought more tractors and
trailers, including four tankers.
John retired in 1982 and Harold’s
son, Bill came into the business.
Harold was a successful and
respected businessman, well known
for always extending a helping hand.
He had a quiet disposition and was
always there for his family.
He was devoted to his wife of 68
years, whom he leaves to mourn his
passing, and his to children: Bill and
and his wife Diana Campbell of
Blyth, Joan Campbell of Truro, Nova
Scotia; Nancy and her husband Albert
Wasson of Blyth, Frances and her
husband Steve Bearss of Auburn and
Dwight Campbell, who preceseased
him in 2002.
Harold was the beloved grandfather
of 13 and great-grandfather of 27. He
is survived as well by sisters Ina
Staffen and Florence Warnes. Four
sisters, Mary McMichael, Ethel
Robinson, Margaret Toth and Helen
Campbell and three brothers, John,
Stuart and Bill also predeceased him.
Harold was a member of Blyth
United Church, Blyth’s Masonic
Lodge and the Clinton Chapter of the
Order of the Eastern Star.
Friends were received at the
Falconer Funeral Homes Ltd., Blyth
Visitation Centre 407 Queen St., onTuesday, Oct. 2, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Memorial services were held at thefuneral home by Blyth Lodge A.F.&
A.M No 303 on Tuesday followed by
the Order of the Eastern Star Clinton
Chapter No. 266. The funeral service
was held at Blyth United Church on
Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. with Rev.
Lorenzo Ramirez, a former minister
of Blyth United Church and a family
friend officiating. Pastor Tom Dunbar
assisted.
Flowerbearers were Wyatt Bearss,
Sean Campbell and Alex Shannon.
Pallbearers were Grant Campbell,
Randy Campbell, Michael Cronyn,
Herb Govier, Mark Pawitch and
Michael Pawitch.
Cremation, with interment of ashes
will take place at Blyth Union
Cemetery at a later date.
Donations to the Blyth United
Church or to the charity of one’s
choice would be appreciated as
expressions of sympathy.
HILDA RUTH HARKES
Hilda Ruth (nee Bowers) Harkes of
Clinton passed away after a
courageous, but short battle with
cancer at Clinton Public Hospital on
Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007. She was in
her 77th year.
She was the wife of Gordon Harkes
and dear mother of Keith Harkes and
his wife Paula of Calgary, Alberta,
Bev Blair and her husband Alex of
Blyth and Robert Harkes and his wife
Marianne of Calgary, Alberta. She
will be lovingly remembered by 10
grandchildren and three great-
grandchildren. She was the sister ofNoreen Coates of Listowel. A sonHarold Harkes (2001) and a brotherAllan Bowers predeceased her.Friends were received at the
Clinton Chapel of Falconer Funeral
Homes Ltd., 153 High St., Clinton on
Thursday evening from 7 - 9 p.m.
where the funeral service was held on
Friday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. with Pastor
Les Cook officiating.
Interment was in Clinton Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, the
family would appreciate memorial
donations to the Canadian Cancer
Society.
ISABELLE SHORTREED
Isabelle Aileen (Warwick)
Shortreed of Seaforth passed away at
the Seaforth Manor Nursing Home on
Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007.
Born in Morris Twp. on Nov. 21,
1916, Isabelle was in her 91st year.
Isabelle was the beloved wife of the
late James W. Shortreed. She was the
dear mother of Joan Beuerman of St.
Paul’s and Ken Shortreed and his wife
Judy of Walton. She was the dear
mother-in-law of Bill Smith and his
wife Helen of Mitchell. Isabelle was
the dear sister-in-law of Helen
Warwick of Bluevale. She was also
loved by her 12 grandchildren, her 33
great-grandchildren, a great-great-
granddaughter and her many nieces
and nephews.
She was predeceased by her
daughter Louise Smith, brothers Bob,
Jack, Jim and Lloyd, four brothers-in-
law and six sisters-in-law.
Friends were received by the family
from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday from
the Schimanski Family FuneralHome, Brussels. The funeral servicewas conducted from MelvillePresbyterian Church, Brussels onWednesday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. with Rev.
Cathrine Campbell officiating. As a
tribute to Isabelle, Margaret McInroy
sang The Old Rugged Cross
accompanied by Grace Jutzi at the
piano.
Carrying floral tributes were
Barbara Smith, Michelle Beuerman,
Kendra Wilts and Amy Whyte.
Pallbearers were Gary Smith, Scott
Beuerman, Randy Beuerman, Jim
Shortreed, Robert Shortreed and
Allan Wilker.
Interment was in Brussels
Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy,
memorial donations may be made to
Melville Presbyterian Church or to
the charity of one’s choice.
