These are old bridges and they’re going to need a lot of work.” At the meeting, council passed a recommendation to proceed with the remediation of several boundary bridges. Three are in Huron East with an estimated upgrade total of $37,000. Two are in Morris- Turnberry, $52,000; one in Ashfield- Colborne-Wawanosh, $26,000; two in Central Huron/Bluewater, $33,000 and one in South Huron with no cost. The recommendation also states that at the end of the warranty period, following completion of the remediation, the bridges will be removed from the county highway system. “This is not treating lower tiers equally,” said Huron East councillor Bernie MacLellan. He suggested that council consider pro-rating the costs. “It’s going to be hard to quantify if a bridge needs to be upgraded. Wait until it does then pro-rate it. No one pays now, but we see it’s there at some point.” Warden Deb Shewfelt of Goderich said that most other counties have done this a decade ago, and that he believed they had all been cash payments. “Just because others have done it, doesn’t mean anything to me,” said Seili. “I’m dead set against any downloading to lower tiers, especially when they have no intention of lowering part of the tax levy. It’s the same thing the feds and the province did.” Huron East councillors sponsored the Oct. 1 euchre in Ethel with 11 tables in play. Winners were: share the wealth, John Subject, Keith Turnbull; high, Helen Dobson, John Subject; lone hands, Hilda Holmes, Murray Hoover and Ray Kingsley; low, Ruth Bauer, Jim Smith. Tally winners were: Earl McNaughton, Isabelle Craig, Shirley Verstoep, Bill Craig, Jean McNaughton, Keith Turnbull, Mary Craig, Marguerite Beirnes, Shirley Kingsley, Grace Stewart, Olive Little, Joan Jacobs, Dorothy Martin, Ross Stephenson, Myrna Burnett and Mary Huether. The next euchre will be held on Monday, Oct. 15 at 8 p.m. Women are asked to bring lunch. 6 tables in play at Cranbrook euchre party Ethel euchre has 44 out to play A rookie Doris Moss chose to exhibit her hand-crafted blankets for the first time ever at Auburn’s craft show last weekend.
