For the fourth year, local florists are campaigning to raise funds for the Huron County breast screening clinic in Goderich. Luann Taylor of Luann’s Country Flowers and Gifts in Blyth and Goderich began the Take Care fundraiser which is held each October in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A breast cancer survivor her hope was not just to raise funds but to remind women to ‘take care’ of themselves. Seven other florists have joined Taylor in her cause: Village Vines, Exeter; Blooms ‘n’ Rooms,Seaforth; Flower Magic, Seaforth;PerFect Designs, Clinton; Cooke’sFlorist, Clinton; Flowers on Main,Wingham and Everlastings,Lucknow. They will be selling a dozen carnations at $19.99 with $5 going to the clinic. Each bouquet comes with an information pamphlet breast self-examination. “We want to raise awareness and remind people to go to the doctor,” said Taylor. In its first year, Luann’s raised $500 for the Take Care campaign. In the years since that amount has tripled annually with more florists coming on board. Taylor asks people to contact the participating florist in their area to support the cause. By Mary Lou Stewart Special guests at the monthly general meeting of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 420 were Zone Commander Stewart Taylor and Deputy Zone Commander Peggy Griffin. Motions that were passed by members present benefitted the Blyth Skating Club, $100; Seaforth Marching Band, $100; the Children’s Health Foundation, $100 and Blyth Legion Auxiliary, $300 to provide comfort to the vets at Parkwood Hospital. The members voted to support the Saugeen Maitland girls hockey team through advertising in their brochure and the Alzheimer Society of Huron County by purchasing a set of tickets. The Legion is also supporting the four area hospitals through the annual Hospital Radiothon with a donation of $50 for each hospital. Upcoming events in the work of the Legion include Friday night meat draw and darts, Oct. 12; community breakfasts, Oct. 28; annual poppy campaign, Nov. 3 and church service, Nov. 4. The Legion has offered to participate in the annual Operation Christmas Child program this year. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 8 p.m. Sympathy is extended to Bev and Alex Blair and family in the death of Bev’s mother who passed away this past week. Happy 91st birthday to Margaret Wasson of Brussels who celebrated on Oct. 8. Happy birthday to Robert Nesbit who celebrated Oct. 7. Don’t forget all you euchre players that Monday night euchre is starting again this fall and winter at the Legion Hall at 7:30 p.m. beginning on Monday, Oct. 15. Visiting at the home of John and Sheron Stadelmann were John’s cousin Paul and Yvepte Stadelmann from France, Joan Stadelmann from Goderich and Rhonda and Joe Ryan and Johnny from Walton. Bernice Pierce had a very pleasant surprise on Friday, Oct. 5 as her grandson Brendan Pierce made a fly by over her house to say “Hi, Grandma!” BLYTH UNITED CHURCH Greeting at Blyth United Church on Sunday, Oct. 7 were Randy Fraser and Enid MacDonald. Ushering was Rob Mason. Guest organist was Lynda McGregor. Guest speaker, Emily Phillips, welcomed everyone to church for Thanksgiving Sunday with the Call to Worship, which was repeated responsively. The first hymn was Rejoice the Lord is King. This was followed by the Prayer of Confession, the Assurance of Pardon. The choir sang an anthem, Let All Things Now Living. The next hymn was Come In, Come In and Sit Down. Mrs. Phillips told the children’s story, Thank You Hands, followed by The Lord’s Prayer. The scripture verses from Ruth and Psalm 147 were led by Ollie Craig. The hymn, We Praise You O’God, was sung. Mrs. Phillips’ message to the adults was Being Thankful for Small Things.
