PAGE 23.Entertainment Leisure&Stratford Festival welcomes back Christopher Plummer for 2008 season Huron County women showcased on compilation Noted! is a joint project between Huron United Way, Heritage and Culture Partnership and Women Today to develop and promote the female musicians of Huron County. The goal is to produce a compilation CD of top industry standards featuring 10 female artists from the county. “Participants will be selected to take part based on their submitted demos with representation from all types of music, age levels and experience,” says Louise Fagan, producer, Louise Fagan Productions. “There will be no cost to any of the women chosen to take part.” Noted! aims to overcome the perceived barriers that living in a rural community has on reaching ones’ full potential,” says Kimberley Payne, executive director, Huron United Way. “By utilizing existing resources and facilities in Huron County, we aim to prove that the infrastructure and expertise does exist here to support the professional aspirations of the local musical community.” The Noted! project is broken down into three segments. The first of these will see the selected participants take part in a two-day training session of workshops on a variety of music industry topics including: songwriting, voice production, and marketing. These education sessions will provide the musicians with skills and knowledge they can use in establishing themselves as professional Canadian musicians. The next step is for the artists to go into a local recording studio in early 2008 and record. Each woman will have the opportunity to record one song of their own and they will be provided the services of a professional producer, recording engineer and necessary studio musicians for the track. Once the recording is finished the files will be sent to be professionally mastered and the final CD manufactured. “We are already rich in talent in Huron County, what’s needed now is opportunity and the access to professional expertise to build a tool kit for success,” says Payne. “The Noted! project provides the necessary experiences and skills development in order that our talented women can realize their dream of a successful career in the Canadian music industry from their home base of Huron County.” The final phase of the project will revolve around the launch of the CD in the spring of 2008. The official launch will feature a concert with all of the musicians from the CD taking part and getting their chance to show what they can do live on stage. The initial launch concert will be followed by several smaller concerts throughout the county. To qualify to take part in this exciting venture you must be a female resident of Huron County and have reached the age of 16 by Dec. 31. Applicants are asked to submit a recorded song demo along with a bio by Nov. 1. For more information on Noted! and to obtain a full list of the eligibility qualifications contact Payne at 519-524-7900 or kpayne@huronunitedway.ca or pick up forms at Ernie Kings, Goderich location. With Shakespeare firmly established as the centrepiece of the 2008 playbill, the Stratford Festival of Canada now announces two musicals and a Shaw classic. The season will feature The Music Man and Cabaret, and Christopher Plummer will return to the Festival stage to play Julius Caesar in Caesar and Cleopatra. “Our goal for this Festival is to illuminate Shakespeare’s work and give audiences an exciting variety of theatrical experiences,” says general director Antoni Cimolino. “We’re very proud of the season we’re putting together and also delighted that Christopher Plummer will be joining us again.” The Avon Theatre, which housed this summer’s hit My One and Only, will continue in the musical tradition with The Music Man and Cabaret. The Music Man, one of the most successful and popular musicals ever written, will be directed by Susan H. Schulman, who directed To Kill a Mockingbird this season. Cabaret will be directed by Amanda Dehnert, who co-artistic director Don Shipley says is quickly becoming one of the leading forces in American musical theatre. She is a resident director at Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, RI, where she has directed such shows as The Fantasticks, My Fair Lady and West Side Story. Caesar and Cleopatra will be directed by co-artistic director Des McAnuff. Plummer’s leading lady will be Broadway and film sensation Anika Noni Rose, who won the praise of New York theatre critics for her performance in the hit show Caroline or Change, for which she won a coveted Tony Award. She is also known worldwide for her portrayal of pop singer Lorrell Robinson in the movie Dreamgirls. Plummer last appeared at the Stratford Festival in 2002 in a production of King Lear that went on to New York’s Lincoln Centre. The 1996 season featured Plummer in Barrymore, which also went on to Broadway, where Plummer won a Tony Award for his performance. In July the Festival announced it would be changing its name to the Stratford Shakespeare Festival to reflect its commitment to Shakespeare and the classics. The playbill includes Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, All’s Well That Ends Well, The Taming of the Shrew and Love’s Labour’s Lost, as well as the classic plays The Trojan Women by Euripides, Fuente Ovejuna by Lope de Vega, and Emilia Galotti by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. Several new works are still in the planning stages for 2008 and will be announced as soon as details are confirmed. The Stratford Festival box office will open to the general public on Dec. 1, a month earlier than usual.
