Majestic is the hostess for the District annual in May 2008. A discussion followed about the possibility of holding the first fall casserole supper and card party on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. Roll call was answered by naming a foreign country that starts with one of your initials and the capital of that country. Convenor Leona Armstrong spoke on the structure of the Federated Women’s Institute starting at the member level and going up to the Associated Country Women of the World. The Women’s Institute has over 110 years of experience dealing with concerns for a safe and secure society. This is a place for members to voice their opinions in all aspects of life. New members learned about some of the changes brought about from these concerns such as information on labels, railway crossings, strobe lights on school buses and other advocacies. Mrs. Armstrong finished by explaining that the ACWW has a convention every three years. She has been able to attend one in Toronto and one in Tasmania and has made many new acquaintances. One of her friends is the president elect, who sent her information on the conference held in Finland in June. After singing O Canada. Yvonne Knight provided lunch. A little off the top Grey Central Public School student Lexi Smith donated eight inches of her hair to help make a wig for someone who has lost their hair as a result of chemotherapy. Smith wasn’t alone though. Two other girls chopped ponytails off in front of the entire student body while a few others received cheers because they had cut their hair for cancer earlier in the year. The school then embarked on the Terry Fox Run as did the other schools in the area. At this time we would like to acknowledge the members of the Branch and Ladies’ Auxiliary for their work and contributions that they have given over the past years. Although our first commitment is to the care and comfort of our veterans and veterans’ widows, the Legion also supports our youth groups, local schools, hospitals, community centres and organizations such as our local fire department. Special gratitude is extended to the public for supporting our events to help make our commitments possible. Comrade Mary Lou Stewart, PRO Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 420 Hot dog!
