There has been much speculation
about what the sign on the lot at
Pianovations means. In conversation
with Tamara on Saturday I learned the
details.
The business that began in
Londesborough has continued to
grow and the original location is
crammed. The decision has beenmade to set up a retail store in one ofthe newly-renovated stores in Blyth,402 Queen St. Tamara will be at thatlocation Wednesdays throughSaturdays.Restoration will continue at theLondesborough location and anyonewishing to tour that aspect of theirbusiness may still do so by
appointment.
The title of the message at
Londesborough United Church on
Sunday, Sept. 9 was Remain Moist
Clay. Rev. Pat Cook’s supporting
scriptures were Psalm 139 and
Jeremiah 18: 1-11. Sunday school for
the young folk began that morning.
The UCW will meet on Monday
evening, Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m. and at
8 p.m. for the meeting.Air waves and newspapers havebeen full of the results recently of theTruscott inquiry. One comment raisedduring all these months and yearswhen conversations turned toSteven’s plight/case was “how couldhe tell the make of car he saw fromthat bridge?”There were so few cars on the roads
in the ’50s compared to today. Every
teenaged boy of that era, yearning for
his own driver’s licence, knew all the
makes and its features. I, for one,
never doubted that statement by him.
In those days, a way to pass the
time on a trip probably centred
around identifying the makes. Car
bingo has been around for a long time
in one form or another.
Remember the shoulder punchingthat went along with punch buggyspotting? Now each car company has somany models it makes one’s headspin to keep up to date.We can’t remember a summer whenwe spent quite so much time on theroad. Although we didn’t make anymajor trips such as I reported on last
week, our trips were more in the line
of celebrations for family members or
to help someone out.
One foray did take us to Montreal
for a few days where we toured Body
Works, an exhibit of plastinates. This
exhibit was in Toronto some months
ago.
This has been a roundabout way to
talk about a new way to pass the time
on the road, looking for personalized
licence plates. These plates are seen
ever more frequently but Ontarians
have a particular liking for this form
of identification. And nowhere are
there more than right here in
southwestern Ontario.
All of you likely know more than
one family with a personalized plate.
Our truck sports one, “PAPA TRK”,
to recognize Grandpa’s new title. The
idea behind this plate is obvious as
are some others I spotted, some were
amusing and some one can only guess
at. I offer these examples. One can
only admire the imagination.
Work-related plates we spotted
were AUCTNR, REALTY, TRUST
(financier), NAVY NUC.
Examples of Canadians love for
their cars is reflected in these plates,
SMART 1 4 2 on one of those new
Smart cars; PAY BACK on a
Mercedes; INCNTV$, on a hot red
convertible; VROOM; and
TOPNOTCH, also on a convertible.
Personality is revealed in STREST,
MS BOOGIE, HLTHY, AS IRISH,
BN SO BAD, HOOPLA, D FYANT,
TAKEM EM, BLD (bald?bold?). Acouple of sports plates were noted,N2GOLF, CI COBBS, and NFL DADI.This one seems to be telling JamesBond to move on, BAEL 007. Thiscar must park at a home with childrenor perhaps at a childcare centre,PATECAKE. This one may have beena gift with a message or perhaps a
proposal, I WUVE OO. Does this one
reflect what is left in the owner’s
pocket after the car purchase or the
owner’s special talent 06 CENTS.
I’ll leave you with a couple to
ponder over, JEWEL, SAFEQUEST
and I PEAK.

Sponge relay
Grade 9 students at St. Anne’s Secondary School in Clinton were put to the test, working
together to pass a wet sponge from the front of the line to the back with people they didn’t
know. This was just one of the ice-breakers at last week’s orientation day at the school. There
was a tug of war, duck, duck, goose and more. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
A United Church Women’s
meeting was held Tuesday, Sept. 11
at the Knox United Church
basement. Guest speaker Helena
McShane gave a talk on Zambia.
She collected home-knit teddy bears
and school supplies along with t-
shirts for children age six - 12.
The roll call was one of those
items to be collected. These will be
sent on Oct. 2 with a team making a
trip to that country.
Dorothy Schneider is hosting an

from 10 a.m. until noon at 103
Goderich St.
Everyone is welcome. Children
are especially welcome. Jim’s
