Strange sighting
Sept. 1 brought the alpacas to town to help celebrate the
grand opening of Maple and Moose. The animals are
owned by Dianne Kirk-Benincasa of Alpace-Trazz of
Palmerston. She is one of the many vendors in the store,
which features all Canadian products. This is a co-op store
managed by Bev Elliott of Blyth. From left: Jackie Riggs,

Powerful Players play ballBy Ellen JeffersonThe fourth meeting of theWawanosh 4-H Powerful Playersclub was held on Aug. 29 in Auburnat 7 p.m.Scott Jefferson led the pledge androll call. The roll call asked whether
the prices of skates and helmets were
reasonable. Some very excellent
points were brought up, including
the thought that helmets should be
priced cheaply to encourage their
use, and also that people should be
willing to pay more to protect their
skulls.
The members discussed dates and
plans for the remaining meetings.
Meeting five will be held in
Belgrave, at the ball diamond on
Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. to play flag football. The last meeting will be in Auburn inthe Missionary Church gym onThursday, Sept. 13, for volleyball. Before the next meeting themembers are to brainstorm ideas forthe achievement night.
Mary Ellen spoke about the
difference between protective and
sports equipment. Ellen Jefferson
demonstrated how to find the sweet
spot on the bat by tapping it, while
holding it in her hand, to find where
it didn’t vibrate. She tested out three
bats and discovered that it is usually
three to four inches from the end.
Sophie Jefferson led the club in
measuring their strength. Of the
people tested, Mary Kate Higgins
was the strongest. The teaching team for baseballconsisted of Mary Kate Higgins,Erica Bos and Madison MacLean.Erica led the stretches, and Madisonand Mary Kate led the drills. Themembers began by playing catch and
then they practised catching the ball
and making plays on the field.
Then it was time for the Purple
Cobras to play the Heavy Hitters.
Both teams were enthusiastic and
made up a team cheer. However
because the Heavy Hitters
concentrated more on the game, they
beat the Cobras 7-2. All members
had a great time and are looking
forward to playing flag football at
the next meeting on Sept. 1.
Now is the time!

The County of Huron wants to say
thank you to the county’s emergency
workers and has declared a day of
recognition for emergency workers
on Sunday, Sept. 9.
Huron started the annual
Appreciation and Recognition Day
for Emergency Workers in
recognition of the Sept. 11, 2001
terrorist attacks. They want to show
appreciation for the firefighters,
police, ambulance and other
emergency workers in the area.
County warden Deb Shewfelt
says, “The daily actions and ongoing
sacrifices of our local emergency
workers to keep us safe are
remarkable.
The county has asked all local
churches to participate by including
recognition of the day in their
service on Sept. 9.
“We are hoping the churches will
take a few minutes with the
congregation to recognize local
members who serve and protect us.
It’s one small way of saying thank
you to valuable emergency workers
in our communities.”
Letters of appreciation have also
been sent to area emergency
workers. The county is hoping
everyone will take time on Sept. 9 to
thank their local emergency
workers.
