Knight took the walk and scored the fifth run of the inning on Conley’s hard single. Walton failed to score in the second inning but put three more runs on the board in the third. S. Knight again started the rally with a stand-up double, followed by a double by Lowes, double by Roulston and a long-ground single to centre by Easton. In the fourth inning Walton scored twice more when S. Knight hit his second triple of the game to bring home Rathwell and Upshall. The final score after four innings was 10-0 for Walton. It was on to the last game of the round-robin against Peterborough on Saturday afternoon. The Walton team held Peterborough scoreless in the first but had another great at bat. Walton scored four runs out of seven batters. An opening bunt by Robinson put him on. He advanced on a single by Roulston. McDonald stroked a beauty double to score Robinson and Roulston. Pinch runner Lowes, in for McDonald, stole third then was safe in a rundown at third on a dropped third-stroke pitch thrown to first. The batter, Easton, was safe at first. B. Knight hit a long fly ball that was dropped then was tagged out trying to get the third, but not before both runners had scored. Walton held Peterborough off the board until the fourth inning when one run scored. Until that point Conley had pitched a great three innings facing 12 batters, striking out six and allowing only three hits. In the third inning Walton scored three more runs by Conley earning the walk. S. Knight pounded a long fly ball to right for a double. Lowes slashed a triple down the first base line and Roulston slashed a double down the third-base line to score Conley, Knight and Lowes. Walton added one more run in the fourth when B. Knight got on with a single and scored on Jackson’s triple to centre field. Walton allowed one more run in the fifth for a final score of 8-2 for Walton. They ended the round-robin with three wins, giving up only five runs in three games to finish fifth out of 32 teams. The playoff round was Saturday night. The opponents were the North Bay Hoppers. Jackson pitched the complete game giving up one run in the first inning, then coming on strong facing 16 batters, with nine strikeouts, and five hits. Walton again took advantage of a great first inning hitting attack with S. Knight starting off with a double then Lowes hitting a line-drive down the first base line, to score him. Roulston stroked a long fly to right field to score Lowes and a centrefield bloop by McDonald scored Roulston. A deep fly to right field by B. Knight scored McDonald to garner a four-run inning. In the second McDonald hit a hard drive that handcuffed the shortstop. He advanced when Rathwell hit a high chopper to shortstop again and legged out the throw to be safe at first. Singles by Neill and Conley advanced McDonald to score before the inning ended. In the fourth inning, Easton hit a lead-off triple and scored on a deep fly ball before the inning ended. The final score was 6-1 and the Walton McGavin FS Master Brewers advanced to the quarter finals for the first time in their four- year history of attending the tournament. Sunday morning brought an early rise for the first game of the day at 8:30 a.m. The opposition was the K.C. Trappers from Porquis Junction. For the first time in the tournament, Walton wasn’t home team and they failed to score any runs in the first inning. K.D. did score three runs, then two in the second. The Walton team managed a run in the fourth when Robinson’s single bought in S. Knight after he doubled. Another run scored when Easton who had singled came home from Jackson’s line drive to right field. The final score was 5-2 for K.C. and Walton’s weekend was over. The men did very well and B. Knight was proud of the squad he fielded for maybe the last time. Rumblings of retirement echoed from some of the team members so they are very pleased with the result of their 2007 play.
