HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-08-30, Page 31There were quite a few Walton-
area men off to Bowling Green,
Ohio a week ago to have fun and
enjoy trucks and tractors. They were
Don Dalton, Bill McClure, Ron
McCallum, Brian Alcock, Lorne
Glanville and Nelson Ryan.
Happy anniversary to Bill and
Susan (Langlois) Myers. They
celebrated their 25th anniversary
with a gathering at their Clinton
home for family and friends.
Congrats to them.
Celebrating an anniversary and
three family birthdays were the
Huether families. Travelling to
Brampton and Kevin Huether’s
home, the families celebrated Gary
and Joan (Huether) Ritchie’s 25th
wedding anniversary, as well as
Mary, Brian and Angie Huether’s
birthdays. They had a social
afternoon together, then went out for
dinner.
The funeral service of Thomas
McFadzean was held in Brussels
with Rev. Sandra Yule conducting.
Mr. McFadzean was a resident of the
Walton area many years ago.
The McFadzean farm was on
Walton Road in Grey Twp. Lot 4,
Conc. 17, is now owned by Chris
and Judy Lee.
Condolences to the family and
friends of the McFadzeans.
Our condolences are extended to
Susan Murray and the extended
family on the passing of Laura
Murray. Laura Murray was a long-
time resident of Walton until moving
to Seaforth. Our deepest sympathy
to all.
Home for a visit with mom Jeanne
Kirkby, was Paul Kirkby. Paul and
his family now live in Ottawa.
Here for a visit from Calgary are
Mike and Chrissy Warwick along
with three-year-old Sydney. They
are here visiting the McDonald
relatives including mom Karin
(McDonald) Calhoun of Bayfield,
Grandma Leona McDonald and, of
course, us. Chrissy and Sydney
arrived a week before Mike and
enjoyed a nice week with Grandma
Karin. Since Mike’s arrival they
have been boating with Rick and
LeeAnn, enjoyed a family reunion,
golfing and a trip to Niagara Falls.
Always nice to have the kids home.
It was a Stevens family reunion
that we attended on Sunday at the
Seaforth Lions Park, a spur of the
moment gathering of the families of
the late Ernie and Alberta Stevens of
Walton.
Able to attend from Walton area
were Leona (Stevens) McDonald,
Rick and Jo-Ann McDonald,
LeeAnn (McDonald) Konarski,
Karin Calhoun with Mike, Chrissy
and Sydney Warwick, Marg
Rogerson and the daughters of
Murray and the late Doris Criche,
Sandra, Pat and Sharon along with
their husbands and families.
It was a nice visit with all,
swimming in the pool for the kids
and a great potluck meal was
enjoyed by all.
A gathering of family and friends
celebrated the 60th wedding
anniversary of Ron and Joan Lee. It
was held at their home outside of
Whitechurch with around 30
gathering for a lovely social
afternoon and potluck meal. An
anniversary cake topped off the
party.
All the Lee family was able to
attend, including Chris, Judy, Brett,
Tracy, Caden, Matt, Cheryl, Ryder,Hayden, Christine, Jeremy.Stephanie, Bryce, Ezra and Tim Lee.Other guests included Ann Clark,Keith Galbraith, and wife along withseveral neighbours.Congrats to former WaltonnersRon and Joan on such a specialmilestone.A gathering of family, friends andneighbours was held at the Cranbook
Hall for bride-to-be, Marni
Dingman, fianceé of Steve Knight.
The shower was hosted by
neighbours Madeline Steiss, Eleanor
Stevenson and Marion Morrison.
Marni received many lovely gifts
including a beautifully decorated
cowboy hat of bows.
She also had lots of little helpers in
opening the array of gifts with a
number of children helping out. It
was a lively night concluding with
thank yous and a light lunch for all.
The shower for bride-to-be Julie
Moffat was held at the home of Val
Shortreed, mother of groom-to-be,
Matt Shortreed. It was hosted by
Krista Shortreed and Wendy (Rose)
Boyd. It was a Pampered Chef
shower where anonymous gifts of
cash were presented for Julie to
choose and purchase Pampered Chef
items for her kitchen. Consultant
Tracy McKee prepared a delicious
lime trifle for the guests to enjoy. It
was a very nice afternoon with
punch, dessert and thank yous. The
guests attending signed an apron for
presentation to Julie.
Sunday was a lovely day for a
gathering of the Pryce and Marks’
families. Home for a holiday from
Calgary are Brian and Linda Marks.
The families gathered at the home of
Dwayne and Karen Pryce. They
enjoyed the afternoon and a potluck
meal together.
Home for a short visit with
Howard and Audrey Hackwell were
Pam Hackwell and Patricia and
Sebastian Andrades. They also
attended the family get-together for
Brian and Linda Marks at the Pryce
home. Sebastian came along with
Grandpa Howard to have his last
helping hand night at the Sunday
night dance at the Legion, before
heading back to school.
Someone out there doesn’t have
much to do with their time as piles of
straw bales were set on fire on the
weekend. All across Huron County,
they were hit with arson, as on
Friday night numerous fire
departments were called out to fight
these fires.
Closest to Walton was a load on
Hullett-McKillop Road that was
ablaze. The dollar value lost to the
many piles is very high. Thankful,
the bit of rain on Friday night and
Saturday morning kept the fields
from being completely ablaze.
Can you imagine? Bryan
Finlayson is 60! A surprise party was
held on the lawn at Bryan and
Brenda’s home on Walton Road.
Family, friends and neighbours were
on hand to help Bryan celebrate.
They enjoyed a meal provided by the
family and a wonderful evening
together on Saturday night.
McGavin’s Farm Equipment and
Farm Supply have the right idea.
They held their employee get-
together this past weekend. They
enjoyed golfing at Dave Smith’s
Riveredge golf course at Cranbrook
for the afternoon, then went to Jeff
and Shannon McGavin’s for a social
get-together and food. Reports are it
was a wonderful afternoon.
Patty Banks reports seeing a very
unique nature sighting. Travelling
along the old rail track she witnessed
a spruce tree covered with what
seemed like the autumn glow of
bronze leaves. What looked like
leaves, was actually the gathering of
hundreds of monarch butterflies.
They covered an entire area of the
tree like a mat and Patty reports what
a beautiful sight it was.Marie Mitchell and children, Sean,Sara, Emily and Claire, along withPhyllis and Emerson Mitchelltravelled to Port Elgin on theweekend for a unique treat for theMitchell family. They were there toride the Port Elgin train. Now what’sso special about that, you ask? Thetrain was being engineered byGordon Mitchell.
Gordon has been taking a steam
train engineer course over the past
year and has now completed the
course and is fulfilling the required
hours needed for his certification.
Gordon has been interested in
steam engine trains for many years
and is fulfilling his desire to learn
more and achieve his engineer’s
licence.
What a great turnout for the
benefit dance for Brad and Gayle
Speiran on Saturday night. A full
house attended and enjoyed the
silent auction and live auction of the
many donated items.
The Speirans lost their dairy barn
to fire about a month ago and they
were overwhelmed with gratitude
for the support and generosity of
everyone. You can’t beat the support
of the people of this area and
community. Congrats to everyone
for their support of those in need.
Construction has begun at
McGavin’s in Walton for the new
building. We will be watching the
progress. This past week, the
footings were poured.
Across the road at Duff’s United
Church, some men have been at
work repairing the roof. Specialists
in slate roof repair have been fixing
and repairing some areas on the
entire roof. Hopefully they will befinished this week as Sundayservices will resume Sept. 2.Birthdays celebrated in the pastweek or so included Joan Perrie,Devin Blake, Marion Godkin, RobMcIntosh,Andrew McDonald, JacobFlood, Nicole McIntosh, EmersonMitchell, Gloria Wilbee, TerriGulutzen, Pat Nolan, BradShortreed, Viola Traviss, Cheryl
Lee, Mary Huether, Sandra Zwep,
Albrecth Ringennberg, Rhonda
Ryan and Kim Strome. Congrats to
all.
It’s back to the real world and
driving the bus next week. Kids are
back to school so everyone needs to
be alert for those excited children.
Walking to school in town or racing
out laneways to catch the bus,
drivers need to be watchful. Watch

The Walton Masters played in the
Clinton tournament on the weekend
as a prelude to participating in the
North Bay Masters tournament.
The men played a Friday night
game that was called due to weather
and a flip of a coin decided the
winner. Not Walton.
Their second game was Saturday
morning against Sebringville. It wa
sa very young looking master team.
They were good batters and
fielders and a 14-8 loss was taken by
Walton. Doug Conley pitched for
Walton and went two for two at bat.
Having good at bats also were Bryan
Neill, two for two, Bruce Pearn
three for three and Murray Houston
two for two.
Game three saw Walton against
Clinton. They earned their only win
of the weekend with a score of
7-6.
Floyd Upshall was on the mound
and Pearn was top batter again going
three for three. A string of hits in the
bottom of the fifth inning by Neill
Upshall, Doug Jackson, and Pearn
scored the three runs for the victory.
Other members of the Walton
Masters were Brad Knight, Steve
Knight, Rick McDonald, Jim
McDonald, Terry Elligsen, and
Murray Houston.
