It was an “awesome” experience
for a Blyth athlete when he played
for the Chepstow Midget Colts
fastball team at the national
championships in Saskatoon.
“It was more than I ever imagined,
for sure,” said Darcey Cook, who
wasaccompanied on the trip by his
family, parents Debbie and Steve
and sister Michelle.
He acknowledges the community
support from Howsons, the Legion
Ladies Auxiliary, Luann’s and
Scrimgeours. “I wouldn’t have been
able to go without their help.”
The Cooks arrived in Saskatoon
Aug. 11, and were treated to a
banquet that evening. The
competition which involved 12
teams from across Canada began the
next day.
The Colts first met up against
Napanee and came out on the losing
side of a 6-1 outcome.
The next match was against the
host team, the Aspen Selects. This
was another disappointing outcome
with the Colts losing 3-1.
The tide turned Tuesday when the
Colts played another Saskatoon
team and came away with a huge 8-
1 victory.
The next game they repeated the
score against the Calgary Rockies,
then brought down Sooke Smoke,
B.C. by a score of 8-3.
The next game turned out to be a
nailbiter against Quebec, but the
Colts squeaked out a 1-0 victory.
After an 8-1 loss against Leduc, the
team played Newfoundland and
won 4-2.
This ended round robin play,
putting the Colts in fourth place,
tied with Napanee and
Newfoundland.
The tie-breaker was played on
Friday, Aug. 17 against
Newfoundland and this time it was a
different story as the Colts lost 11-8.
In their final game they found
themselves facing Sooke Smoke
again and came up short 4-0.
“I felt we played well. Pitching
was good. Sure we would have liked
to do better, but there were a lot of
good teams. Finishing fifth in
Canada is nothing to look down on,”
said Cook.
Personally, Cook got recognition
twice in the daily newsletter
highlighting the games played. In
the game against Quebec, after
getting to first, the report stated,
“wily Cook then proceeded to steal
three consecutive bases including
home to score the only run.”
At the end of the tournament he
was second in stolen bases and had
gone four for hour in stolen base
attempts.
While offensively he was a little
lower than usual, batting .238, his
on-base percentage was 500.
Defensively, Cook, who played
every game in centrefield, had 10
put outs. His fielding percentage
was 1,000.
Rough takedown
Listowel and Wallace tangled last weekend on Sparling Field in Blyth as the annual U-18
tournament continued. The game remained scoreless for much of the second half, sending it
into overtime. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
