HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-08-30, Page 7John and Sheila Nixon welcomed
worshippers to Knox United Church
on Sunday, which would be a
morning of celebrations, as well as a
farewell to Rev. Ethel Miner Clare
and her husband Sanford, who has
served the Belgrave charge for seven
years.
The church was decorated with
pots of mums. Hymns for the service
had been picked out by Roger
Hopper, who would be received into
membership that morning.
Following the opening hymn
Come In, Come In and Sit Down,
with Elizabeth Procter at the organ
assisted by Lila Procter on her
guitar, the opening prayers and
prayer of confession were given. The
anthem, We Will Keep Our Faith
Alive, was sung by the senior choir.
Psalm 91 was read responsively and
followed by the hymn, I Was There
to Hear Your Borning Cry.
During the children’s story Rev.
Ethel told the children about the new
stole she was wearing which she had
purchased on her recent trip to
Eastern Europe.
During her address, Rev. Ethel
thanked the leaders and volunteers
of the Vacation Bible School for
another successful week. She also
spoke of the enthusiasm of the whole
congregation since she had arrived in
Belgrave.
Ken and Andrew Procter took up
the morning offering.
Joyce Vincent, clerk of session,
introduced Roger Hopper to the
congregation who wished to renew
his faith, proclaimed in his baptism.
Following the promises made by
Roger and the congregation, Roger
was joined at the front of the church
by his wife Debbie, and two girls,
Jenna and Kayley, as well as by
Joyce Vincent, for the laying on of
hands. Mrs. Vincent welcomed him
to the congregation, and presented
Roger with a Bible. The service
closed with prayer.
The invitation to communion was
given followed by singing the hymn
All Who Hunger. The communion
was served by the elders, and the
closing hymn was I See a New
Heaven.
Following the service everyone
remained for a presentation to Rev.
Ethel by Doug Walker, chair of the
official board. This was a stained-
glass picture of the Belgrave United
Church. He also presented Sanford
with a pot of mums.
Mr. Walker made reference to the
fact that when Ethel was called to
Belgrave, the community was also in
need of a doctor, and Sanford had
been that person before his
retirement last year.
Mr. Walker thanked Ethel for her
ministry to all of the congregation,
whether it be by baptism,
confirmation, visiting or pastoral
care for the dying. Ethel in turn
thanked the congregation for support
she had received from them in
return.
Grace was sung and everyone
enjoyed lunch and a time of visiting
and sharing after the service and
Rev. Ethel and Sanford cut the cake
before it was enjoyed by all.
Next Sunday, services will return
to 11 a.m. with Bruce or Melissa
Whitmore taking the services.
Tuesday, Sept. 4, the Evening Group
will meet at the home of Muriel
Coultes. The deadline for any
newsletter information is due by
Sunday, Sept. 9.

Vacationing
The crafts station was one of three stations at Vacation
Bible School at Knox United Church in Belgrave last week.
Children were split up into groups and while two of the
groups were inside, one was outside enjoying the sun on a
beautiful day. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
