Over the past few weeks I’ve
noticed a few things that inspired an
instant smile. There was perky little
kingfisher sitting on a rock in the
Maitland looking like she really was
the king. The five turkey vultures
sitting on top of five fence posts all
in a line in Grey, looked like the
meeting was about to come to order.
The dog teams in Iqaluit ready for
their bi-weekly feeding of seal
brought the wonders of nature to the
surface. Watching baby Jill learn to
crawl, using all her 4x4 skills to
claim her goal, often some minute
bit of fluff that is in need of beingtasted. The wonder of watchingtomato mature and enjoying thatfirst sweet bite of the season.Oh there are lots of things to smileabout in our world. The cycle of life is another thingthat causes a lot of wonder. Each daythat we have, is a gift and we need to
celebrate each one to the fullest.
Over the past few weeks the many
friends of Helen Gallop were given
the opportunity of appreciating a life
well-lived and a friend truly loved.
As Helen gracefully accepted the
health issues that were hers, she was
once again a good example of how
to be practical, humble and graceful.
Helen died peacefully early
Sunday morning. A service will be
held in September at the United
Church so her many friends can
share their stories of a faith-filled,
fun-loving, community woman.
Bon voyage to the school crew.
Your dreams are in the making.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

The executive of Brussels Legion
Branch 218 met on Tuesday evening.
Upcoming meeting and
convention dates were announced
and other Branch functions
discussed. The rates for 2008 dues
will be the same as 2007. Early bird
dues – paid September until Nov. 30
will be $45 and after Dec. 1 will be
$50. There will be three early bird
draws for dues for 2009 at the end of
September, October and November.
The elimination draw tickets are at
the Branch. Comrades need to stop
in and pick up a book to sell.
The early bird draws are Sept. 8 so
make sure all sold tickets are in by
then.
Euchre was held Saturday with 13
tables at play. The first-place team
was Ivan Bennewies and Ken Engel
with 76 points. The second and third
prizes were split between three
teams, all with 69 points. John and
Iola Subject, Ray and Shirley
Gilders and Stuart and Lois
Chamney.
Low prize went to Dorene Wordell
and Marjorie Jarmuth and lone hand
prizes went to George Bacon and
Fay Albert.
It was a lovely setting for the
wedding reception of Mike Thomas
and Karen Taylor on Saturday
evening at the Branch.
Congratulations to the couple.
There were over 100 enjoying the
music of John Heaman at the
Sunday night dance. Special helper
Sebastian Andrades, with Grandpa
Howard, was on hand. Sebastian has
the job of de-tabbing the pop cans
and squishing them in the can
crusher. He keeps a very tidy area.
Thanks Sebastian.
The Branch still collects pop tabs
as well as pop cans. These can be left
at the rear of the buildings on
Tuesday evening for pickup by
Cadets.
