HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-08-23, Page 16The summer Ken and Betty Hulleywere married, Betty’s mother grew200 gladioli with which to decoratethe sanctuary for the service. For thecelebration of Betty’s 75th birthday, her son, Kevin, used 12 dozen gladsto decorate the LondesboroughCommunity Hall on Saturday, Aug.11. Other decorations includedBetty’s quilts, the making of which
is one of Betty’s hobbies.
Betty’s special evening began witha potluck supper attended by herneighbours and family. More friendsdropped by during the open house, many of whom stayed to enjoy alively evening of old-time music anddance. Local musicians and 18-year-old fiddler and singer JamesRutherford of Shakespeare kept thefloor filled with dancers. At one
point, all seven of Betty’s
granddaughters took to the flooramusing the crowd with theiryouthfulness. Some 150 guests helped Bettycelebrate a special milestone, somefrom as far away as New Brunswick. In memory of Betty’s son, Warren, guests donated $600 to Childcan, acharity that supports the OncologyDepartment at the Children’s
Hospital of Western Ontario.
It was most gratifying to Betty that
all present members of her
immediate family were able to help
her celebrate this birthday. Betty
extends her thanks to all who made
her evening such a pleasure.
As we were in Montreal the
weekend of the celebration for Bert
and Joanne Lyon, I spoke with Jane
Lyon about the celebration. Of
course, ‘though the conversation did
some side stepping. As a result two
persons who attended the couple 50
years ago got missed in the previous
report. Bert’s brother, Murray, who
was an usher 50 years ago and
Marlene Baer of Goderich, who was
Joanne’s maid of honour, also
attended the recent festivities.
One of the side-step conversations
had to do with Wayne and Jane’s
son, Justin. It seems there is a very
real possibility that once his training
is completed his group may be sent
to Afghanistan. This is something
we can remember to ask Bert and
Joanne about in the months to come.
I took a look out of my east
windows one day last week and
spotted something new at the Hullett
municipal shed. As so many of our
townships roads have been paved in
recent years, the works crew must
have a ready supply of sand and salt.
A coverall shed has been erected as a
storage for this mixture.
And, oh yes, the cold weather is
coming! Anyone working outdoors
can testify to the fact that the geeseare already on the move again. However, I’m determined to enjoywhatever aspects of summer are stillin evidence for as long as possible. One afternoon some weeks ago ona trip into Clinton I noticed that onefield along the highway was showinga tinge of purple. A week or so laterI enjoyed that wonderful smell only
a field of clover can give. I’ve made
reasons to travel that way a few
times since just to have my senses
treated again. Mind you one has to
have the windows down to
appreciate the smell; no air
conditioning. By protecting the
environment, one gets to enjoy the
wonders of the environment.
The sympathy of villagers is
extended to Tom and Marjorie
Duizer and family over the loss of
Marjorie’s father, Lorne Hunking on
Aug. 10. Also to B.J. and Ange
(Hunking) Cullen, who lost a
grandfather. Keeping these folks in
your prayers will ease their pain over
the next few weeks.
Lorne and Addie were former
residents of Londesborough until
health problems necessitated a move
into Clinton. Both eventually
became residents at the Exeter
Village.
I remember Lorne as a quiet,
gentle man with a pleasant manner
who was seldom idle. There was just
too much to do and be interested in.
He was always ready to lend a
hand where there was a need, to a
neighbour, at the church or for some
family member.
Raised on a farm in the days of
horse power, Lorne had a life-long
interest in horses, collecting books,
pictures, china, wooden and plastic
replicas, etc. which family members
now appreciate. Trips to events

It was drive-in movie night at Londesborough Fellowship Bible Chapel on Friday night.
Volunteers were busy erecting the screen for that evening’s feature, Billy Graham’s The Climb.
Another drive-in night will be held on Aug. 24 with the movie Last Flight Out. Glen Steinson,
shown above, sets up from the scaffold. (Vicky Bremner photo)
