The Blyth Pre-Mites had a successful season ending with eight wins and four losses. The team improved after losing the first three games of the season to go on and win the next eight games. The year-end tournament was hosted in Blyth on Aug. 18. Blyth’s first game was against Brussels. Blyth defeated the opponent 16-13 to earn a spot in the A final against Lucknow. The Blyth players were ready to play with some timely hitting and error-free defence. Blyth defeated Lucknow 16-14 to capture the A final. Coach Kirk Stewart was very happy with the team’s dedication all year and the improvement that was made. Coach Krista McNichol commented on the sportsmanship the Blyth team had all year. Team members included Mitch McNichol, Jesse McNichol, Cody Bos, Gavin Workman, Owen Andrews, Carson Richmond, Drew Van Wyk, Michaela Rodgers, Colton Rodgers, Mason Campbell, and Brenden Howson. The coaches were Kirk Stewart, Krista McNichol, Steve Howson and Tyler Stewart. A season ends Two Blyth teams went head to head at the soccer fields this weekend during the annual tournament. The score finished at 4-4 in regulation play sending the game to overtime and a shoot-out which was won by the yellow squad. (Vicky Bremner photo) Blyth Pre-Mites A champs On July 27 and 28 the Blyth Squirt Bs travelled to Holmesville for their year-end tournament. The team tied for second place overall for the season with six wins, one tie and three losses. Their first game of the tournament was against Crediton with a 16-3 victory for Blyth. The second game against Winthrop, was well fought but Blyth came out on the losing side of a 10- 5 score. This put them in the B-side of the tournament. Their third game was against Crediton with a 13-7 victory. They went on to play the B championship game against Holmesville and won 24-10. The team showed great team spirit and had a great sportsmanship attitude throughout the season and tournament, said coaches. With eagles on holes 11, 12 and 17, 11 birdies and for pars the team of Don Edgar, Terry Anger, Greg Storey and Wayne Johnston with celebrities Skip Johns former golf reporter for The Kitchener Record and former AHL hockey player Jim McRae, they came in with a score of 17 under for top prize. Wayne Johnston was also winner of the closest to the pin award on the 10th hole. In second place was a team which included Wingham Golf Club operations manager Dave Meriam and his dad. Third place was captured by the team of Dennis Knox, Brian Carr, Steve Coulter, Larry Gaynor with celebrity Blyth’s Justin Peters. Dennis Knox was a big winner in the draws winning no less than two golf bags. The tourney was a great success bringing in about $5,000 for the WOAA building fund. *** Wednesday seniors saw 17 out to enjoy a game of Roll the Dice — Red,White or Blue. Aart DeVos with pars on holes three, four and five captured top prize. In second spot on his initial visit with the seniors, Ross Peacock was the winner. He was thrilled as it was his best round ever. Bill Johnston captured third prize. Gerry Edwards was closest to the pin on number two and Ray Walker had the longest putt on number nine. This week the seniors format will be Evens or Odds with golfers playing from the white tees on odd numbered holes and from red tees on even-numbered holes with soup and sandwich to follow. *** Wednesday men’s night had 19 golfers out for competition. Once again Terry Powell hit the leader board nosing out Joel Riley for the honours thanks to the retrogression rule – both with scores of 37. Bill McGrath captured the low net with second low net to Rob Gallaher. Shawn Walker was closest to the pin on number eight. Joel Riley won the award for closest to the pin on number three on second shot and Jack McPherson’s second shot on number six was closest to the pin. *** Men’s and ladies’ golf club championships will be held on Aug. 25 and 26. *** There was a good turnout for Thursday night men’s golf with 26 on hand for a quick nine. For the second night in a row Terry Powell hit the leader board with a 38. In second spot was Don Rae with a 39 with Rob Gallaher in third with a 40. There were two hidden scores this week with Ross Danbrook and Bruce Pewtress the winners. This was Bruce’s initial attendance with this crew and he proved he knows the lay of the land, coming in with a 43. *** Ask Dan Campbell his favourite hole of the local nine and there is a good chance he will reply number six. Playing with the Saturday early risers Dan recorded an eagle two with a chip in from inside the 100- yard marker in his front nine and on the back nine had a birdie. *** On Friday, Aug. 18, 26 members took a bus trip to play the Ferns Golf and Country Club at Markdale. Best score of the day was a two over par 73 carded by Dave Meriam. Dave was the big winner of the day winning pin awards thanks to birdie on holes two and 17. Many found the high winds challenging. Questioned about his favourite hole one golfer replied “the 19th”. *** Friday was not the “hanging of the green” but rather “the uncovering of the new greens” for a sneak preview. The results were amazing as the new green additions certainly have a good thick catch of grass. The covers were replaced for further protection and growth promotion. *** The ladies held their golf and barbecue on Aug. 14 with 40 people participating. The ladies played a special scramble with each foursome making a draw after completing the hole to see whose score would be counted.
